The city has over the years suffered from the pile of garbage due to the over crowdedness of the famous Red-Light market by street sellers.
Speaking to FrontPageAfrica, a cross section of marketers in Red-light Market expressed their gratitude to the Paynesville City Corporation (PCC) and the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) for their initial effort in cleaning the principal street of Paynesville but want more commitment from them in combating garbage related issue. According to them, a collective and regularly effort is needed in order to see a clean and green city.
The marketers claim that without the regularly cleaning of the garbage in the Red-light Market and its surroundings by the PCC, the market will remain entangled in filth. They want the PCC and her partners to set up a special team tasked with the responsibility of cleaning the city daily.
“I want to say thank you to the PCC for removing the huge dirt from our selling place because it was really disturbing us. It was making our customers to stop buying from us, but the dirt has now started growing again, so I am appealing to the government to please save our business by removing the dirt from here on a daily basis,” Lorpu Tambah, a petty trader pleaded.
“The dirt that they took from here few week ago will still appear overnight once there is no system put in place by the rightful authority to monitor those that are selling here. They need to set up a special team to monitor and collect garbage from all corners in the market, that is the only way our garbage problem will be solved for good,” Alphonso Kollie, another marketer stated.
Alvin Jones, also a trader, wants robust effort both from the marketers and the relevant authority of government in the collection of garbage in the Red-light.
“We the marketers as well as the government agencies that is responsible for the collection of dirt within the city of Paynesville need to work together as a team in combating this dirt problem because there are garbage coming in this market every day by the same people that are working and selling here, so we need to work together in order to overcome this problem,” he averred.
Like Alvin, another petty trader Alpha Barry, wants inspectors from PCC and the Liberia Marketing Association (LMA) posted at various points in the market as a means of removing dirt regularly from the marketers.
“There are lots of people working both for the PCC and the LMA who are not really doing what they are supposed to do. I am calling on the PCC and the and the LMA to instruct their workers to monitor this market at all time. In that way, they will be able to collect and remove the dirt on time,” he stated.
“My call to this government in this dirt issue is to work with all stakeholders in the business sector in fighting this long-time problem in our community. Everybody that are contributing to this garbage being here will also have to help the government in removing them. Because when there is no dirt on the street and our market places, we will be able to sell in a safe environment free from diseases. But if we just leave this thing to the government alone, the dirt will still reappear in the soonest possible time,” Mary Fahnbulleh noted.
“For me, I think this government needs to be serious and do the right and proper either than what they are doing. They are acting like they are really working but in reality, they’re joking. If they really want to get rid of this garbage here in Red-light, they will come up with a fix system that will be regularly involve with the removal of dirt. That is the only way we are going to solve this problem that we are faced with as residents and business people in Paynesville especially, Red-light”, Fallah Borbor stated.
