Monrovia – The campus base political party at the State-run University of Liberia, Student Unification Party (SUP) is calling on the students’ populace to alleviate fear and continue their normal learning activities at various campuses of the university.
The Capitol Hill campus of university on August, 1 was in chaos when riot erupted between two opposing groups of SUP. One group was demanding the suspension of the Butu Levi, chairman of the party, while the other group resisted his suspension.
Levi was suspended for what the party termed as “gross violation of the constitution, precedence and the tradition of the party.”
But addressing a news conference on Monday, August 13, the new chairman of SUP Prince G. Brown assured students of the party’s responsibility to defend and protect the right and interest of every student at the state university.
Brown said: “SUP encourages all students to carry on their normal activities on the campus as the militants of the party are completely in the charge. SUP militants and cadres are sophisticated with unmatchable tactics and strategies to resist any aggression from reactionary elements.”
Since the suspension of Levi, the fight for control of the party’s headquarters has instilled into fear in many students, leaving some of them to constantly abandon their classes.
On August 4, 2018, riots broke out between the group supporting the suspension and against the suspension of the former party chairman extended outside of the main campus of the University of Liberia.
Since then, relative calm has returned to the main campus, fear is still hovering at the State-run university.
