Margibi County—In response to the growing hardships faced by families due to the recent closure of the Salala Rubber Corporation (SRC), former Indian Honorary Consul General Upjit Singh, commonly known as Jetty, has initiated a weekly hot meal program for children on the SRC plantation.

By: Yawah Y. Jaivey

On Sunday, Mr. Singh provided hot meals to more than 1,500 children across seven camps on the plantation.

He has committed to continuing this initiative every Sunday, offering much-needed relief to the community affected by the indefinite shutdown of SRC’s operations.

The closure of SRC followed a violent protest at the company’s premises in Weala, Margibi County. As a result, over 800 jobs were lost, deeply affecting the livelihoods of many families.

Mr. Singh’s intervention aims to alleviate some of the suffering experienced by the plantation workers and their children in the wake of this crisis.

Speaking during the inauguration of the feeding program, the special assistant to Singh emphasized the motivation behind this initiative.

“Serving humanity is at the heart of Mr. Jetty. He has decided to provide hot meals for the children on the plantation every Sunday,” the assistant stated.

For his part, Mr. Moses Darmo, a contractor at the SRC plantation, expressed his gratitude for Singh’s generosity, acknowledging the expansion of his feeding program from Monrovia and Weala to include the SRC plantation.

Mr. Darmo, however, offered prayers for continued blessings upon Singh as he endeavors to support those in need.

The program has been well-received by the community.

The parents of the beneficiaries said the provision of hot meals for their children not only provides nourishment to them but also gives hope during these challenging times.
