Kinjor, Grand Cape Mount, Liberia – The Chief Executive Officer of Bea Mountain Mining Corporation (BMMC) has detailed the company’s ambitious expansion project, which he said aims to double the annual plant capacity from four million tons of gold annually to eight million tons.

By Emmanuel Weedee-Conway

BMMC is a flagship operation of Avesoro Resources, a privately owned mining firm focused on West Africa. It operates several mines, including the New Liberty Gold Mine, Liberia’s first commercial gold mine.

In a chat with the media following a guided inspection tour of the facility by Vice President Jeremiah Kpang Koung and Mines and Energy Minister, R. Matenokay Tingban, CEO Serhan Umurhan pointed out that this industrial growth is expected to generate thousands of new employment opportunities.

Over 2,000 New Jobs Insight

With current employment standing at 9,000, Mr. Umurhan indicated that the new expansion has the capacity of potentially increasing the total workforce to over 11,000 employees – an increment of 2,000 new workforce.

The Bea Mountain CEO affirms the company’s commitment to local involvement by training Liberian workers for managerial roles to overcome the historical lack of local mining expertise.

“As capacity increases, you need more manpower. When we were producing four million tons, there was certain number of people to produce that four million tons. Now when you increase to eight million tons, then you have to increase your capacity because you need equipment operators; you need more drivers. As your plant capacity increases, you need more people for these plants and other departments also need some expansion and we need workers for them,” explained the BMMC CEO.

Addressing concerns about limited Liberian participation in senior management and contracting opportunities, Umurhan acknowledged the issue and highlighted ongoing efforts to build local capacity.

He noted that when operations began nearly, Liberia lacked experienced professionals in large-scale gold mining, making it difficult to immediately place Liberians in top management roles. However, he said this is changing.

“When you looked at the skills people, it was difficult to find before because there was any commercial gold mine in Liberia. But within 10 years, we have made a good success story in Liberia in commercial gold mining,” he said, adding that the company is actively investing in skills development to further increase local representation at higher levels.

Umurhan discloses that expansion project is expected to have a direct impact on the people of Grand Cape Mount County, particularly in communities within the company’s concession area.

Liberia, Favorable Destination For Investment

Although there had been some hurdles along the way, CEO Umurhan says Liberia is a favorable and welcoming investment destination.

He recounted the strong bond of positive relationship that has subsisted between the company and the people since it began operations in 2013, noting that the environment has felt “like home” throughout the years of investment.

“Liberia has its advantages and disadvantages, but for us, we always feel like we are in our own country,” he noted as he highlighted the warmth of Liberians and the company’s longstanding collaboration with local communities.

Bea Mountain Mining Corporation, which began gold production in 2016, Umurhan told reporters, has steadily expanded its operations despite early challenges, including limited infrastructure and a shortage of skilled labor due to the absence of a prior commercial gold mining industry in the country.

Umurhan credited the company’s sustained investment and commitment for helping to build what he described as a “success story” for Liberia’s mining sector.

Construction of Sports Academies

As part of the shared vision of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and company, the BMMC CEO disclosed that the company has started the implementation of plan for the construction of two sports academies.

As part of the plan, he explained that the academies will identify and enroll kids from age, 12.

“When we identify these kids, we will take them to our sports academy in Monrovia. Now, we are constructing three pitches and one academy building which has 70 rooms. They will stay there and they will go to school and then they will go for practice and training. They will be given the opportunity to become professional sports players in the world.”

Umurhan is upbeat that the success of these academies will have a trigger down positive impact on the country’s national soccer squad – the Lone Star.

“This is going to affect football quality and it’s going make a better Liberia national team. The same success we make in the mine, we want to make the same success in football sector,” he added.

VP Koung – It’s Good For The Government And People

In brief response to a question posed to him by this writer during the guided tour regarding BMMC’s expansion project, Vice President Jeremiah Kpang Koung expressed optimism that this investment will have a long-lasting impact on the lives of citizens.

VP Koung stated that the new investment plan, which aims to increase revenue and provide jobs, is in alignment with the government’s development agenda.

“Yeah, this is good for our government and it’s good for our people. It’s going to provide new employment opportunities for our people,” VP Koung asserted.

Mines Minister Endorses Company’s Expansion, Says Liberia Is Moving To A Noble Height

The Minister of Mines and Energy Minister, R. Matenokay Tingban, has expressed government’s support for these developments, noting that the expansion will significantly boost national revenue.

“Expansion of Bea Mountain concession means increase in revenue and infrastructure. Liberia is set to move to a noble height. Though there was budget increment, this is not where we supposed to be as a country. This expansion comes with a lot of opportunities and all we encourage our investors is to live within the confines of the law of this country.”

With regards to the exploration of raw materials, Minister Tingban says there is high level of at the concession with strong monitoring mechanism in place.

“We are on top of our game in terms ensuring compliance. The Bureau of Concession is on top of that as part of a joint government initiative. We are not just sitting and watching. There is a whole control room with CCTV that monitors everything here. There is high level of transparency of the activities done here. There are still problems, but there are good parts that we must mention in our reportage,” the Minister among other things stated.

Monrovia – The final four of the 2025 Bettomax Champions Cup have been confirmed, with Heaven Eleven, Global Pharma, Bea Mountain, and Freeport FC booking their places in the semifinals following an exciting group stage.

The inaugural edition of the tournament, which started on August 23 and will conclude on September 7, is part of a three-year partnership with the Liberia Football Association. The competition features the top eight teams from the First Division League at the end of every season and is scheduled to be held at the start of every league season. Clubs are also competing for a cash prize of $15,000 for the winner.

Global Pharma topped Group B with seven points, scoring four goals and conceding just one. The Bushrod Island–based club, currently in the process of a name change to Borough FC, began their campaign with a comfortable 2–0 win over Discoveries FC, followed by a 1–0 victory against Watanga FC. They ended the group stage with a 1–1 draw in the highly anticipated Bushrod Derby against Freeport FC, securing top spot in the group.

Freeport FC also advanced from Group B, finishing second with five points from one win and two draws. Their resilience ensured they remained in contention for the Champions Cup trophy.

In Group A, Bea Mountain qualified for the semifinals with seven points, recording two wins and a draw, while Heaven Eleven finished second with six points, registering two wins but suffering one loss.

Clubs that failed to reach the semifinals include Discoveries FC and Watanga FC. Interestingly, Watanga, one of the tournament sponsors, did not score a goal throughout the competition, losing all three of their games. Discoveries managed one win and one draw but were eliminated, while Blackman Warriors and Paynesville also failed to progress after winless group stage campaigns.

The upcoming semifinals promise high-stakes encounters as Heaven Eleven, Global Pharma (soon-to-be Borough FC), Bea Mountain, and Freeport FC vie for a place in the Bettomax Champions Cup final and the $15,000 cash prize. Football fans in Liberia can look forward to thrilling matches as the tournament heads into its decisive stage.

Monrovia – Following the issuance of a Writ of Execution by the Commercial Court of Liberia against Mutual Benefits Assurance Company (MBAC) for its failure to settle a judgment of US$11,226,573.85, the insurance company has initiated efforts to amicably resolve the matter with Bea Mountain Mining Corporation (BMMC).

Legal experts say such a move is typical when the losing party believes it has little to no chance of prevailing through further litigation.

In a letter dated July 12, 2025, addressed to BMMC and signed by Cllr. Aloysius Teah Jappah, Legal Counsel for MBAC, the company expressed its willingness to settle.

“I write on behalf of Mutual Benefits Assurance Company to confirm our continued commitment to an amicable resolution of the matters presently in dispute between our institutions,” the letter stated.

It continued:

“In line with public policy favoring negotiated settlements, Mutual has authorized its designated Board members and senior management to join legal counsel in the next phase of discussions. We believe this step reflects the seriousness with which we approach this matter and our desire for a principled and constructive outcome.”

Background of the Case

The Commercial Court’s order, signed by His Honor Judge Chan-Chan A. Paegar, authorized the seizure and sale of MBAC’s land, goods, and chattels to satisfy the debt. If these assets prove insufficient, the writ allows the court to seize the company’s real property.

The action stems from a commercial lawsuit filed by Bea Mountain Mining Corporation, represented by General Manager Hall Ozdemir, against MBAC for failure to honor financial obligations under four bond instruments issued in favor of BMMC.

On April 27, 2022, the Commercial Court ruled in favor of BMMC and awarded judgment in the amount of US$9,847,604.28, determining MBAC’s liability under the contract. MBAC, dissatisfied with the ruling, noted an appeal to the Supreme Court and filed a Bill of Exceptions on May 18, 2022. As a result, an escrow account was opened at Guaranty Trust Bank to hold the judgment amount, pending resolution of the appeal.

However, without further notice to BMMC, MBAC later abandoned the appeal process and filed a petition for a writ of prohibition with the Supreme Court’s Chambers Justice, then Associate Justice and now Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene G. Yuoh. Although an Alternative Writ of Prohibition was initially granted, Justice Yuoh eventually quashed the writ after arguments.

MBAC then appealed to the full bench of the Supreme Court. In a January 25, 2023 opinion delivered by Justice Joseph Nagbe, the Court held that MBAC could not abandon a legally initiated appeal process in favor of a writ of prohibition.

“The appellant cannot abort the appeal process and substitute it with an application for a writ of prohibition,” the Court ruled in Mutual Benefits Assurance Company v. Her Honor Eva Mappy Morgan et al.

The Court further instructed the Clerk to send a mandate to the Commercial Court to resume jurisdiction and enforce the judgment. Despite this, MBAC failed to deposit the judgment amount into the escrow account and instead filed a Bill of Information, which the appellee argued was a delay tactic and in bad faith.

MBAC later filed a second petition for prohibition before Chambers Justice Yarmie Gbeisay, rehashing issues already settled by the Supreme Court—an act seen by BMMC as an attempt to obstruct enforcement of the Court’s final judgment.

Pattern of Resistance

This is not the first time MBAC has resisted court orders in the matter. In April 2023, the company reportedly locked its offices and refused entry to court officers attempting to enforce a writ issued by Judge Eva Mappy Morgan. That resistance delayed execution, but this time, the court has successfully effected the writ of execution.

MBAC’s recent approach, however, signals a shift toward compliance and resolution—an outcome that could avoid further reputational damage and legal consequences for the company.

As discussions begin, it remains to be seen whether both parties can reach a settlement or whether the court will proceed with the auctioning of MBAC’s assets to satisfy the judgment.

Monrovia – Bea Mountain Football Club have announced the appointment of veteran Liberian coach Cooper Sannah as its new head coach on a two-year deal, signaling the club’s most ambitious move yet in pursuit of its first-ever league and Orange Cup titles.

By Christopher C. Walker christopherc.walker@frontpageafricaonline.com

The Cape Mount-based First Division side, popularly known as “The Gold Boys,” confirmed the appointment on Tuesday, June 3, 2025. The contract will run from 2025 to 2027.

In a statement issued by the club, officials said, “We are pleased to announce Coach Cooper Sannah as the new Head Coach of Bea Mountain Football Club for the period of two seasons (2025–2027).”

Sannah is widely regarded as one of Liberia’s most accomplished coaches. He currently serves as the head coach of Liberia’s U-20 national team and is a former deputy coach of the senior Lone Star squad.

His coaching resume includes successful stints at top Liberian clubs such as LISCR FC, LPRC Oilers, Watanga FC, and Barrack Young Controllers (BYC FC), with whom he won four Liberian Premier League titles, four Super Cup trophies, one President Cup, and the “Who Owns the Land” tournament.

One of his most memorable achievements came in 2017 when he led BYC FC to eliminate Malian giants Stade Malien from the CAF Champions League, nearly reaching the group stage before a dramatic penalty shootout loss to Mozambique’s Ferroviário da Beira. Reflecting on that historic match, Sannah told FrontPage Africa, “That moment with BYC in the Champions League was special. It showed that Liberian clubs can compete beyond our borders if we prepare well and believe. That’s the mindset I’m bringing to Bea Mountain.”

Sources within Bea Mountain say Sannah’s appointment is central to the club’s long-term plan to cement its status as a major force in Liberian football. Club President Ben Davies described the move as a calculated step forward, saying,

“This is a timely and strategic appointment. Coach Sannah has proven he can manage pressure and deliver results. We are confident that under his leadership, Bea Mountain will take the next big step.”

The club had a strong 2024 campaign but failed to win any silverware. With Sannah now at the helm, the focus shifts to a serious title challenge in both the LFA First Division and the Orange Cup. Known for his organized, high-press style and commitment to youth development, Sannah said preparations would begin immediately. “My goal is to build a balanced team that can dominate possession but also be ruthless in front of goal,” he said. “We’ll be looking at squad depth, fitness, and tactics from day one.”

The announcement has energized fans across Grand Cape Mount County, especially in Kinjor where the team is based. Supporters see Sannah’s arrival as a turning point in the club’s pursuit of silverware.

“We have been close so many times,” said Varney Kamara, a longtime fan. “With Coach Sannah coming in, we finally believe this could be our time.”

As the 2025 LFA season approaches, expectations are high for Cooper Sannah, Liberia’s most decorated coach in recent years, who now takes charge of one of the country’s most ambitious clubs. His challenge is clear: to deliver titles, build a legacy, and lead Bea Mountain into what many hope will be a golden era for football in Cape Mount.

Monrovia – Bea Mountain Mining Corporation and the Gold and Diamond Mines and Energy Workers Union of Liberia (GODIMEWUL Local #2) have officially signed a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) aimed at strengthening labor-management relations and improving the productivity and welfare of workers.

By Selma Lomax selma.lomax@frontpageafricaonline.com

The agreement, signed on May 1, was reached through a process of social dialogue between the company and the union. According to both parties, the agreement is designed to ensure mutual understanding, uphold workers’ rights, and enhance the company’s operational efficiency, ultimately contributing to the growth of Liberia’s economy.

The CBA outlines key areas such as minimum pay rates, salary structures, working hours, conditions of employment, and procedures for resolving grievances.

The agreement was crafted in alignment with Liberia’s Decent Work Act and is intended to prevent industrial unrest by establishing clear guidelines for cooperation between management and the workforce.

Under the agreement, Bea Mountain formally recognizes GODIMEWUL Local #2 as the sole and exclusive representative of its workers covered under the bargaining unit. The union, in turn, pledged to promote responsible leadership, improve productivity, and collaborate with management in good faith.

Both parties agreed to maintain a non-discriminatory work environment, ensuring that employees are not treated unfairly based on gender, tribe, political affiliation, religion, or union membership. The company also reaffirmed its responsibility to maintain workplace discipline and sound business practices, while the union committed to upholding employee conduct in line with the agreement.

The agreement applies to all Bea Mountain employees below the superintendent level who are under either definite or indefinite contracts, but it does not cover employees of subcontractors. Within a set period, the company has pledged to distribute printed copies of the CBA to all covered employees and to support efforts to raise awareness about its provisions.

The union will be responsible for communicating the content of the agreement to workers, while Bea Mountain will facilitate this process through its internal departments.

The newly signed CBA defines important terms and conditions, including the scope of the bargaining unit, the status of employees covered, and the roles and responsibilities of both the employer and the union under Liberian labor law.

This agreement marks a significant step in fostering industrial peace, promoting decent work, and ensuring that both workers and management operate within a transparent and respectful framework.

Employees may submit complaints and reports concerning the effectiveness of the Group Medical Insurance Company to the Employer. The Employer shall investigate any such reports and take appropriate corrective action if necessary to ensure the health and welfare needs of the employees and their dependents are adequately met.

The Employer agrees to maintain a comprehensive Group Life and Accident Insurance Policy for all employees covered under this Agreement. This insurance shall provide compensation in the event of death, disability, or injury resulting from occupational accidents or diseases as defined by the applicable Liberian laws and the policy provisions.

The Union shall be informed in writing of the name, contact details, and coverage scope of any Insurance Provider selected by the Employer for both medical and life/accident policies. Any proposed changes to the insurance provider or its terms shall be communicated to the Union prior to implementation.

In the case of fatal industrial accidents, the Employer shall ensure that the insurance provider processes the claims of the deceased employee’s dependents in a timely and transparent manner. The Union shall be notified of the status of the claim upon request.

The Employer agrees to hold an annual review meeting with Union representatives to assess the performance of the insurance provider and identify areas for improvement in coverage, access, and claims processing.

The Employer shall provide adequate housing facilities for employees working at remote or site-based locations, particularly those engaged in shift or rotational operations.

Housing shall include access to clean and safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, and basic utilities including lighting and cooking facilities. The Union shall be permitted to conduct periodic inspections, in coordination with the Employer, to assess living conditions.

The Employer shall maintain a minimum standard of cleanliness and hygiene within the housing premises, and ensure that maintenance and repairs are performed regularly.

The CBA outlines key areas such as minimum pay rates, salary structures, working hours, conditions of employment, and procedures for resolving grievances.

The Employer shall also provide decent and safe accommodation for female employees, including private sanitation facilities and adequate lighting to ensure personal security.

Employees residing in housing provided by the Employer are expected to maintain good conduct and observe all posted housing rules and regulations. Violations of housing policy may result in disciplinary actions as outlined in the Employer’s code of conduct.

The Employer agrees to comply fully with the occupational health and safety regulations set forth under Liberian Law and international best practices, including ILO Convention 155.

A joint Safety and Health Committee shall be formed, comprising representatives from both Management and the Union. This Committee shall conduct monthly inspections, risk assessments, and oversee safety training programs.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) shall be provided at no cost to employees whose roles expose them to health or safety hazards. PPE must be used in accordance with training provided, and non-compliance may result in disciplinary measures.

All workplace accidents, injuries, and near-misses must be reported immediately to the supervisor and recorded in an incident log. A formal investigation shall be conducted, with findings shared with the Union.

KINJOR, Grand Cape Mount – A tragic road traffic accident occurred on February 15, 2025, at approximately 3:16 AM within the New Liberty camp of Bea Mountain Mining Company (BMMC) in Grand Cape Mount County, Liberia. The incident involved a stationary yellow Volvo A-40G, operated by 52-year-old Philip V. Blenwhen, and a yellow Komatsu 785 truck driven by 48-year-old Abraham D. Kromah.

According to reports, the Komatsu truck collided with the parked Volvo, resulting in Blenwhen being found unconscious beneath the rear tire of his vehicle. He was immediately transported to the John F. Kennedy Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Meanwhile, Kromah has been taken into custody at the Gold Camp police station as authorities continue their investigation.

Eyewitness Accounts

Eyewitnesses in Kinjor reported that Blenwhen, a long-time employee of Bea Mountain Mining Company, had stopped his truck on the BMMC New Liberty TSF Road for unknown reasons—possibly to relieve himself. He then moved toward the front of his truck near the rear tire. At the time, the lights of Blenwhen’s vehicle were on.

A source familiar with the accident explained that a Komatsu mine dump truck, approaching from behind, crashed into the stationary truck. The impact resulted in Blenwhen being fatally crushed under the rear tire.

Reports indicate that both trucks had fully functional headlights and stop lights. Additionally, there were designated safe parking spaces along the roadside, and the road had been recently watered to reduce dust.

Following the incident, Blenwhen was rushed to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Ongoing Investigation

Police sources confirmed that the Liberia National Police has launched an investigation into the accident. Meanwhile, Bea Mountain Mining Company has pledged full cooperation with the authorities and is working closely with the victim’s family.

At the family’s request Blenwhen’s remains have been transported to Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, for funeral arrangements.

In a statement, the company expressed deep regret over the incident and urged the public to refrain from politicizing what it described as a “workplace accident.” It also called for respect and dignity for the deceased and his grieving family.

Bea Mountain Mining Corporation continues with the rehabilitation of major roads in project affected communities and the Grand Cape Mount County. Road rehabilitation is part of the Company’s contributions to the nation by ensuring improved road networks in the County, which is intended to reduce the constraints faced by the citizens in transporting their goods and services from one location to another during both the dry and rainy seasons.

Over the years, BMMC through its Construction Team rehabilitated several roads such as the Beh-Gondor Road, Jenemana to Bomi Wood Road, Kinjor to Daniel’s Town Road, Kinjor to Jenneh Brown Road covering 16 kilometers, M’baloma to Lofa Bridge with 22 kilometers, Lofa Bridge to Gold Camp Road, Dagantee Road, Jikandor road and Malina road to name but a few.

Meanwhile, citizens of Grand Cape Mount County appreciated BMMC for the developmental initiatives undertaken by the Company in their respective communities. They further lauded the Management of Bea Mountain Mining Corporation for the initiatives, stressing that the intervention will address their aged old deplorable road conditions and will also reduce the huge transportation fare for citizens.

“Moving from one point to the other was a difficult task for us, but with the intervention of BMMC, plying the road has been easier than it was during the rainy season”. Peter Y. Dahn, a resident of Bomi Wood Community, remarked.

Besides the rehabilitation of roads, several projects are being implemented within Darblo, Mana and Laar Clans through Bea Mountain’s Clan Development Fund Program. Some of these projects are: the maternal waiting home and nurses’ quarter in M’baloma, Darblo Clan, a mosque in Koikor, the construction of a school in Gbenii, the construction a school in Bomi Wood, the modern clinic in Tahn, a clinic in Varguaye, and a clinic in Beh-Gondor Town, a guest house in Keita, Laar Clan, and a school in Wealiquah among several others.

Mr. Dahn also lauded BMMC for the construction of a hand pump in their town; stating that the Company has started the construction of a school in their community, noting that the project when completed will be a very great help for their children.

At the same time, the Chair Lady of Jenemana Tenneh Jasper commended BMMC for the road. “First of all, I tell Bea Mountain for fixing our road, the Company rehabilitated our road from Gondor Town Junction to Jenemana, and from Jenemana to Bomi Wood. The road used to be very in a deplorable state, especially during the rainy season, but for now we can easily transport our pepper, bitter ball to the market.”

Addressing the media on Monday, September 16, 2024, Cllr. Jacob K. Dayrell Sr. chairman of the First Instant Board (FIB) of the Liberia Football Association, said there are other clubs who have met up with the regulations but some clubs are still behind.

Cllr. Dayrell told the media that following a proper evaluation and verification process, over nine clubs were identified as having outstanding documentation issues, which means they did not meet the minimum requirements under CAF regulations.

Cllr. Dayrell named the clubs in violation as Upper women side Real Muja, first division outfits LPRC Oilers, Heaven Eleven, Mighty Barrolle, Invincible Eleven, Bea Mountain, while second division clubs who are have not met up with the regulations are, Margibi FC, Junior Professionals, Cece United, Samira Fc and NPA Anchors.

He said as part of the process, FIB has invited the clubs in violation to a meeting where they will be required to explain their failure to meet up with the prescribed minimum requirement.

Cllr. Dayrell explains that the exercise is an essential step in understanding the gravity of the offences in order to determine the applicable sanctions.

However, the eleven Clubs both First and Second divisions respectively have been given a 6-month clemency period to prepare their documents for submission.

He also said the First Instant Board (FIB) has granted licenses to 25 clubs that have met the necessary requirements to compete in the 2024/25 league season.

He added the 25 clubs that passed the threshold to participate in the league have ‘’demonstrated commitment and standards’’.

‘’During our second sittings, the FIB granted licenses to 25 clubs that have met the minimum requirements set by CAF and LFA.

‘’These clubs have demonstrated their commitment to meeting the standards required to participate in the league and the FIB congratulates them,’’ Cllr Dayrell said.

The FIB Chairman also told reporters that the newly promoted clubs [Women’s Upper League] or would-be-promoted clubs [to the 2nd Division] will be granted a six-month clemency period in accordance with CAF regulation to prepare their documentation for submission.
