Monrovia – The Campaign Committee of the Collaboration Political Parties (CPP) says it is troubled by the preliminary results being attributed to the CPP by the National Elections Commission (NEC).

“From all across the country, partisans and supporters of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) are informing us of troubling concerns that places where they voted, including in large numbers, are reporting ridiculously low numbers for the CPP’s Presidential Ticket. This is also true where CPP down-ballot candidates are projected to win,” the CPP said in a press statement.

The CPP described the results as an “undemocratic trend” and lamented that it is happening at every polling station across the country.

According to the CPP, their partisans and supporters are compelled to conclude that the results for the CPP Presidential Candidate, Alexander Cummings, may have been predetermined and does not reflect the actual ballots.

“We are assessing these troubling reports and alarming concerns and urging all Liberians to be peaceful, as we do so. We are determined to ensure that the true will of the voters are upheld,” the CPP stated.

The statement concluded, “Let there be no mistake: The outcome of the October 10 Elections must be seen by the people of Liberia to freely and fairly reflect their will. Nothing else can be acceptable.”.

Monrovia – Liberians, eager for a high-stakes showdown among prominent presidential contenders ahead of next week’s crucial elections, were left disappointed when three of the leading candidates – President George Manneh Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), former Vice President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, Unity Party (UP) and Alexander Cummings of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP), opted out of Tuesday’s presidential debate.

By Gerald C. Koinyeneh – gerald.koinyeneh@frontpageafricaonline.com

The debate, held at the Ellen Johnson Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, Monrovia, marked the first of two debates organized by a consortium of media and civil society, with support from USAID through Internews Liberia.

According to Internews, the primary objective of these debates is to facilitate informed decision-making among voters. They provide an opportunity for voters to gain insight into the candidates’ positions on critical issues, their policy proposals, and their vision for the future, enabling them to make informed choices during the elections, Internews said.

Ten presidential candidates were scheduled to participate, including the incumbent President George Manneh Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), former Vice President Joseph Nyumah Boakai of the Unity Party, Alexander Cummings of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP), Simeon Freeman of the Movement for Progressive, Allen Brown, Jr. of the Liberian Restoration Party (LRP), Bendu Alehma Kromah as an Independent Candidate, Lusinee F. Kamara, Sr. of the All Liberia Coalition Party (ALCOP), Richard Saye Miller of Liberia for Prosperity (LFP), William Wiah Tuider of the Democratic National Allegiance, and Joshua Tom Turner of the New Liberia Party (NLP).

However, while some presidential candidates not originally scheduled to participate in Tuesday’s debate did join, most of the expected contenders did not.

Why Did They Skip?

Organizers of the debate did not officially disclose whether these candidates provided valid reasons for their absence. Nevertheless, President Weah and Amb. Boakai were on campaign tours in southeastern and northern Liberia, respectively.

Prior to the debate, Eugene Nagbe, the campaign manager of the CDC, had announced that President Weah would not participate in any debate, but the CDC did not provide further explanation. When contacted, Amos Tweh, Secretary-General of the UP, referred to a letter addressed to Internews, explaining Boakai’s absence due to campaign commitments.

Here is an excerpt:

“Vice President of Liberia and Standard Bearer of the Unity Party. His Excellency would have me convey to you that though he would have love to attend the debate among Presidential candidates scheduled for October 3, 2023 at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex, Congo Town, Monrovia at 9:30 am, unfortunately, due to his campaign tours of Lofa and the challenging road conditions, he is unable to be at the debate. It is the hope of His Excellency the former Vice President Joseph Nyumah Boakai that the debate organized will meet its targeted goals.”

The CPP did not respond to FrontPage Africa’s inquiries.

Debates stand as a cornerstone of a thriving democracy, enabling citizens to assess the stances, policies, and leadership attributes of candidates. So, when the standard bearers of the ruling CDC, CPP and UP – the most likely to win presidential candidates abstain from participating in debate they had earlier signed up for, it prompts concerns regarding their commitment to open dialogue and their ability to defend their ideas directly to the electorate.

This sentiment was shared by some voters following the conclusion of the first debate at the EJS Ministerial Complex.

“Timing of the debate is not good. They should have done this before [the] campaign started. Also, the fact the incumbent doesn’t participate takes away the flavor it should have,” wrote Joel Bimba, a follower of FrontPage Africa who watched the debate live.

Tony Flex, another voter wrote: “We always lose the opportunity to leverage such an important activity to inform voters’ decisions because this event is always held at the peak of [the] campaign. Organizers need to be more strategic in scheduling the event at the time all aspirants will be available to participate. If I will suggest it should be done around the period when NEC is still reviewing political parties campaign schedules for approval.”

But Ed Dun was more appreciative of the candidates that showed up: “Liberia votes on popularity! Thanks for coming and explaining your plans! But keep coming and we will circle back next elections. God bless y’all.”

Highlight of the Debate

Despite the absence of the leading candidates, the debate was not without its share of drama.

Simeon Freeman, a Liberian businessman and politician, pledged to repurpose the Ministry of Gender’s budget for programs benefiting women. Freeman said doing business in Liberia is difficult and vowed to improve the business environment if elected.

He urged Liberian voters to elect him and not to be frustrated with the current government and Amb. Boakai, as it could lead to a disaster.

Bendu Kroma, one of the two female presidential candidates, called for the election of another female leader, emphasizing Liberia’s history of electing only one female president, who performed exceptionally.

Sheikh Kouyateh of the Liberia First Movement proposed creating Easter and the end of Ramadan as national holidays for Christians and Muslims, respectively.

Joshua Turner, a relatively lesser-known candidate, expressed his intention to install video cameras in the offices and vehicles of cabinet officials to combat corruption effectively.

The debate covered a range of topics, including education, agriculture, health, rule of law, infrastructure, foreign policy, economy, peace and reconciliation, youth empowerment, corruption, and gender inclusion.

Meanwhile, the upcoming debate is scheduled for October 6 in Gbarnga, Bong County. Organizers have announced that candidates who were initially slated to take part in the first debate but did not attend are welcome to participate in the second and final debate if they choose to do so.

MONROVIA – In one of his powerful campaign messages, Alexander Benedict Cummings, standard bearer of the Collaborating Political Parties has rallied tens of thousands of supporters to vote him and Cllr. Charlyne Brumskine as President and Vice President come October 10.

By Gerald C. Koinyneh – gerald.koinyeneh@frontpageafricaonline.com

Mr. Cummings, addressing a mammoth crowd at the CPP victory rally on Sunday at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium in Monrovia, taunted his closest rivals, incumbent President George Manneh Weah of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and former Vice President Joseph Nyumah Boakai of the opposition Unity by calling on his supporters to vote reject the pair at the polls.

“My fellow Liberians, to the young people of Libera, to the women of Liberia, to the elderly, on October 10, let’s give President Weah a red card… and park the sports car in the garage. Let’s choose real change for our country, real change for the young people of Liberia. We want to look after the older people of Liberia, we want to look after the women, we are going to provide loan to Liberian businesses, Cllr. Brumskine and myself are going to fix Liberia,” said Cummings as he mounted the podium to address his ecstatic supporters.

The “Grand Rally’

The CPP victory rally on Sunday marked the culmination of the parties’ campaign in Montserrado County. The CPP decided to reschedule its rally to October 1st, deviating from the initial plan of holding it on October 6th. Cummings attributed this change to communication from the National Elections Commission, which informed them that three other political parties had also planned rallies for the same day. In the spirit of constructive engagement and avoiding conflicts with other political events, Cummings said as an opposition leader that is committed to a different approach, chose to shift the rally date to October 1st. Appearing on the popular 50-50 talk show, he called on supporters and Liberians who want change, the turn out en masse.

And his supporters did not disappoint. Dozens of political auxiliaries, interest and civil society groups as well as inter-religious groups and supporters of legislative aspirants turned out in the tens of thousands on Sunday in support of the rally at the ATS.

auxiliaries included the Global Youth Movement, Wings of Cummings, Moboidral For Cummings, Progressive Liberians for Cummings, CPP Bestee For Life, Cummings Support group, Friends of PatMandela, Wisner and Attorney Lawrence Sua, Sambola, Nancy, Brisco and Roseline.

Others were the Cummings Alternative Girls, Royal Sisters for Cummings, Alternative Girls, Alliance for Justice and Democracy, Young Professionals of Liberia, Acrowd Liberia, Mentrol Bloc 106, Professionals for Cummings, the CPP National Youth Congress, Innovative Youth for Cummings, the WFC- Church, and the Liberia Solidarity Party.

Hundreds of thousands of supporters of Independent and CPP Montserrado and Bomi Counties legislative aspirants also turned out en masse, along with Montserrado County Representative Yekeh Kolubah at the pre-victory rally.

Liberian Performing Artists entertained the crowd with beautiful instrumental music as various other political and support groups danced to campaign songs in support of the CPP Standard Bearer Mr. Alexander Cummings’ presidential bid.

At the ATS, thousands of supporters dressed in the CPP official colors of red, white and green, spread outside the stadium on the United Nations Drive and Lynch Street in Monrovia.

Citizens began converging on the ATS as early as 10 a.m. local time, six hours ahead of the official program.

The CPP Standard Bearer later arrived at the venue accompanied by his wife Teresa Cummings, Vice Standard Bearer Counsellor Charlyne M. Brumskine, along with hundreds of Partisans, supporters, sympathizers and well-wishers.

The CPP Victory Rally turned out to be the biggest musical extravaganza and jamboree, with echoes of music all around the ATS as citizens danced with great excitement.

The arrival of Mr. Cummings and entourage ignited the thousands of supporters with renewed energy and zeal, who danced and shouted slogans such as, “Cummings is the man we want.”

Addressing the tens of thousands of partisans, supporters, sympathizers and well-wishers, the CPP standard bearer expressed gratitude to the organizers, Legislative Aspirants and all Liberians for the huge turnout at the “Victory Rally”.

Cummings assured Liberians that a CPP Government will mark a turning point in the economic life of the Liberian people and will provide decent paying jobs, restore basic infrastructure including good roads, hospitals and schools as well as other social services that will ease the suffering and extreme poverty.

He urged Liberians to turn out en masse on October 10, and give President George Weah a “red card” for his poor leadership performance which has subjected the vast majority of citizens to extreme hardship and deplorable living conditions.

Earlier, CPP Vice Standard Bearer Counsellor Charlyne M. Brumskine cautioned Liberians against repeating past mistakes of electing wrong leaders blamed for the hardship and suffering of the vast majority.

She denounced the 12-year rule of the Unity Party for rampant corruption and the six-year inept leadership of President Weah for massive fraud and poor governance.

The CPP Vice Standard Bearer urged Liberians to reject both the Unity Party and the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) at the October 10 poll.

“You can’t leave from 12 years of suffering, endured another six years of hardship and suffering and want to go back. Liberians must vote them out,” Cllr. Brumskine said.

TUBMANBURG, Bomi County – It was a show of massive support for Alexander Benedict Cummings of the Collaborating Political Parties last week when he toured Bomi and Grand Cape Mount Counties in Western Liberia.

By Gerald C. Koinyeneh – gerald.koinyeneh@frontpageafricaonline.com

The tour commenced in Grand Cape Mount County on Thursday and culminated with a grand endorsement ceremony in Tubmanburg, the capital of Bomi County.

In their official endorsement statement, the citizens said after careful consideration of all presidential candidates in the upcoming elections, Cummings was the most qualified candidate for the presidency due to his remarkable track record.

Ms. Makunnba Dorley, a first-time voter, eloquently read the endorsement statement on behalf of the citizens of Bomi: “Mr. Standard Bearer, it is you and your character that stood tall. Your rich experience and technical understanding of solving critical problems have made you better suited for the presidency of Liberia.”

She continued, “With our current situations as a country and people, we will not accept to be cajoled and misguided. There is too much at stake ranging from bad roads, messy educational systems, a disastrous health sector, lack of infrastructural development and many more. At this stage, gambling our future is not and can never be an option during these elections.”

Cummings is making his second bid for the Liberian presidency, having retired from Coca-Cola as Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer before his initial attempt in 2017, where he secured fifth place with 7 percent of the vote. This time around, Cummings brings campaign experience, greater name recognition, and an extended period of engagement with the people, all of which appear to be resonating well with the electorate.

Ms. Dorley stressed, “It is hard time that we scout out the best surgeon for this most needed political surgery as Liberia is currently in the intensive care unit. I want to assure you that Bomi County is extremely glad to be part of this effort. It is an open secret that Bomi is a victim of systemic failure and bad governance. Our natural resources are being depleted with nothing to show. Other counties with natural resources are even crying louder. It has become imperative that we, the first-time voters step forward and play a meaningful role in putting an end to this national embarrassment.”

The citizens said in Cummings’ vision, they find hope for a brighter future, improved healthcare, a united Liberia, equal opportunities, accountability, respect for the rule of law, equitable wealth distribution, regional and global competitiveness, and a Liberia free of drug abuse and other substance-related issues.

‘Let’s retire President Weah’

The CPP standard bearer expressed gratitude for the endorsement and the warm reception he received during his tour. He urged voters to support him and all CPP representative candidates in Bomi, including Sonnie Kamara of Bomi District #1 and Jartu Boykai of District #2.

He called on the electorate, especially young people, to choose a new path by voting for him and Cllr. Charlyne Brumskine, his vice standard bearer, on October 10.

“It is very important that you encourage your friends, your relatives and colleagues to vote to change our country. Our country has been suffering for too long and the only way we can stop the suffering is to vote for different people. Let’s retire President Weah. And I know I can trust the people of Bomi, women, youth, elders to vote Alexander Cummings and Cllr. Charlyne Brumskine to change Liberia.”

Cummings’ tour in Cape Mount was equally significant. Joined by Cllr. Charlyne Brumskine and Rep. Yekeh Kolubah (Montserrado District 10), they extensively tour the county, visiting numerous towns and villages, including Gbah Foboi, Senji, Kinjor, Lofa Bridge, Gold Camp, Tiennie, Damballah, Bamballah and Mano River.

The tour marked their inaugural campaign activities outside Montserrado County, and it was characterized by warm receptions and enthusiastic support from the local population. Cummings assured the people of Cape Mount that his administration would transform the county and the entire nation, with improved education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

Grand Cape Mount County boasts substantial concessions, including Mano Oil Palm, the former Sime Darby, and Bea Mountain Mining Company (BMCC), Liberia’s largest gold mining company. Cummings expressed his dissatisfaction with the ongoing extraction of natural resources while citizens endure poverty, vowing that his administration would ensure that citizens benefit from their own resources.

Cummings declared, “We will hold Mano Company accountable for their actions.”

“We will make sure that this Mano Company treats you well. It makes me vex, it makes me angry to come to Cape Mount to see all the resources leaving and the people suffering like this. This cannot be your story forever. The young people who represent the future of Liberia are suffering. And we are committed to change that. But first you have to elect us. If we will change this country. You have to elect different people. And when you elect us, the suffering will stop.”

The trip’s highlight took place in Kinjor, the mining epicenter of Grand Cape Mount County, where a large group of supporters warmly welcomed Cummings and pledged unwavering support to the CPP and its legislative candidates K-Rich Foboi and Ma. Yatta Dordor.

Cummings’ message of substantial change resonated with the crowd. Leo Johnson expressed their collective sentiment, saying, “We believe in you, and we trust that when we elect you, you will not let us down. Kinjor will be electrified, and our youth center will be built. Thank you for reaching out to us.”

Numerous other groups, including the Southeastern and Bassa Communities, as well as the Disadvantaged Youth (Zogoes), joined in pledging their support to the Cummings-Brumskine ticket.

Cummings reiterated his message of substantial change if elected, emphasizing, “This is one of the richest counties in Liberia. Cape Mountaineers are smart people. But the people continue to suffer. And this is because they are stealing your resources, they are stealing your money. When you elect us, Kinjor will receive electricity, and as your gold leaves this county, you will benefit. Your living conditions will improve, and the quality of your housing will be improved. How can you live in a country that is so rich and the people are suffering too much?”

Vice Standard Bearer Brumskine, in an impassioned speech, rallied women, youth, and the elderly to vote for the CPP ticket and its representative candidates. She pointed out that the current government, like its predecessors, is mismanaging the nation’s resources while the people endure hardship. She emphasized that the CPP offers voters a choice for a brighter future.

On Thursday, Mr. Cummings, the standard bearer of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP), accompanied by his running mate, Cllr. Charlyne Brumskine, and their entourage, made a triumphant entry into Grand Cape Mount County, marking their inaugural campaign tour outside Montserrado County. The pair is embarking on a journey through numerous towns and villages, where they are receiving a warm reception. In Gbah Foiboi, they were joined by the CPP Representative candidate, K-Rich Foiboi.

Addressing the jubilant crowd, Cummings conveyed his commitment to improving the lives of the people of Cape Mount and Liberia as a whole if elected. He stated, “Let me assure the People of Cape Mount that, when you elect us, we will transform this county, and we will transform this entire nation. Positive changes will take place in your lives, with improved educational facilities, better healthcare, and upgraded infrastructure. You will reap the rewards of this county.”

Grand Cape Mount County boasts some of Liberia’s most substantial concessions, including Mano Oil Palm, the former Sime Darby, and Bea Mountain Mining Company (BMCC), Liberia’s largest gold mining company. Cummings voiced his discontent with the ongoing situation where natural resources are being extracted while citizens endure abject poverty. He vowed that a Cummings-Brumskine administration would ensure that citizens reap the benefits of their own natural resources.

Cummings declared, “We will hold Mano Company accountable for their actions.

“We will make sure that this Mano Company treats you well. Brumskine firmly believed that choosing the future through the Cummings-Brumskine ticket is the right path for Liberia.

Cummings’ tour of Grand Cape Mount County mirrors his 2023 presidential campaign in Montserrado, where he visited several communities. The delegation also made stops at Lofa Bridge and culminated their first day in Gold Camp.

MONROVIA – Of the 20 contenders vying for Liberia’s presidency in this year’s elections, none comes close to the business experience of Alexander Benedict Cummings. No other Liberian, and few other Africans, have climbed so high in the global corporate world. The standard bearer of the Collaborating Political Parties made an extraordinary journey from Monrovia’s poor neighborhoods to the heights of global business as a top executive at the multinational Coca-Cola.

By Gerald C. Koinyeneh with New Narratives

In an interview in his Monrovia office Cummings, 67, said that experience, and his global business contacts, are the key to turning Liberia’s broken economy around.

“I think what distinguishes me from all the other candidates running is the fact that I have the skills and experience to fix the biggest problems affecting our country and our people. And that’s the thing called economy,” Cummings says.

But that business success was not enough to convince voters in 2017’s presidential race when he came in fifth with just 7 percent of the vote. This time around Cummings has things that eluded him last time: campaign experience, name recognition and years on the ground. Election observers are not sure it will be enough to defeat incumbent President George Weah and former Vice President Joseph Boakai. But Cummings professes confidence. If he makes the second round, he claims, he can win.

From “Point Four” to Wall Street

Cummings was born in 1956 and raised in poor neighborhoods of Monrovia’s Point Four and Fiamah. He hails from a lineage deeply rooted in education and entrepreneurship. His father, Alexander B. Cummings, Sr. was a junior minister in the Tubman government and later a priest. His mother, Ayo, a midwife and entrepreneur, shaped his early life by sending him door-to-door to collect payments from customers and keep track of sales.

After attending Demonstration Elementary School and College of West Africa high school, where he graduated as senior class president, Cummings studied at Cuttington University in Bong County and then completed his undergraduate degree in finance and economics at Northern Illinois University in the United States. Returning to Liberia, his first job was at the Liberian Development Bank (LBDI). Soon after Liberia was convulsed by riots and the 1980 military coup. Sensing dark days ahead Cummings returned to the U.S. to undertake a Master’s degree in Business Administration at Atlanta University. He spent five years with the Pilsbury Company, one of the world’s largest food companies, before joining the multinational giant Coca-Cola in 1997 as Managing Director/Region Manager for Nigeria. By 2001, he had become President and Chief Operating Officer of the company’s Africa Group, overseeing operations across 56 countries and territories.

Cummings oversaw a shift in Coca-Cola Africa’s operations from an expatriate-dominated leadership to over 70% African. He is credited with overseeing job creation, empowerment of women and the establishment of the Coca-Cola Africa Foundation, dedicated to education, healthcare, women and water in Africa. He went on to work in the U.K., Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa.

In 2008 Cummings joined Coca-Cola’s global headquarters as Chief Administrative Officer and Executive Vice President, responsible for most of the company’s business functions across 200 countries with an operating budget of roughly $US1 billion and thousands of employees. In August 2023 Coca-Cola had a market capitalization of $US261 billion, making it the world’s 31st most valuable company. Running Liberia’s $800m budget would seem small by comparison.

“In those corporations, I didn’t have family members. You earned the promotion,” says Cummings. “These are things that I bring. Understanding how to attract investors, creating the enabling environment, understanding how businesses make money and the kind of Liberian businesses, entrepreneurs understand that delivering results on that, is where I think I will make a difference. I know how to build an economy.”

In her recollection of her first-time meeting Cummings, Dr. Richardson said he left an impression on her that led her to render support to his presidential ambition. Credit: Gerald C. Koinyeneh-NN/FPA

That extraordinary business journey has drawn many ardent admirers to Cummings’ camp.

“He is gift that is right in time for Liberia,” says Madam Yahsyndi Martin-Kpeyei, a human rights activist and CPP supporter. “Liberia is a nation that is in dire need of an economist, a manager – someone that can fix it.”

“We need a leader with vision, passion and innovation to give us the kind of country we deserve. And Alexander Cummings is the only choice to take us from grass to grace,” says Richmond Wleh, another fervent Cummings’ advocate.

Yahsyndi Martin-Kpeyei, lauds Cummings’ economic expertise. Credit: Gerald C. Koinyeneh -NN/FPA

Dr. Francien Chenoweth Richardson, a popular talk show host and professor, based in the U.S first met Cummings during his 2017 run. She has backed him ever since. “I was so impressed when he said, ‘If any of you guys that are in this room would like to support me because you are interested to get a job in Liberia or other forms of benefits, then you are in the wrong group. You are supporting the wrong person.’”

Lafayette Horatio Gould, founding chairman of the Alternative National Congress, said he and a group of break-away members of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), President Weah’s party, encouraged Cummings to run for president. “This is a man who understands the donor language,” Gould remembers thinking. “He could easily attract foreign direct investment to turn our country around.”

Gould tells a story of seeing Cumming’s handling of an executive member of the ANC who had been accused of financial impropriety. When found guilty, he was suspended immediately. Gould, using one of Cummings most widely used quotes, says “to predict Cummings’s future performance, he should be judged by his past performance.”

Indeed, if the election were decided by experience in economic management few Africans would hold a candle to Cummings, let alone Weah, a former soccer star with little business experience and a degree from an online university. But Gould worries Liberians don’t understand the choice.

“Unfortunately, Liberians have been making decision based on emotions, and not the real issue.”

Campaign Focus on Economy, Accountability, Education and Inclusion

Cummings vows a comprehensive overhaul of Liberia’s economy and a crackdown on corruption if elected. He promises to build an inclusive government, bringing in people of all tribes, religions, and genders, and one that empowers all qualified citizens to contribute to their country. At 27 percent, the CPP, has the highest proportion of female candidates running for the Legislature among the leading parties. Cummings’ running mate, Charlyne Brumskine, a lawyer and the daughter of former political leader Charles Brumskine, is one of only two women at the top of a leading ticket. Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor is the other.

Liberia’s appeal to international investors has taken a hit during the Weah administration according to the 2023 investment Climate Statements by the U.S. Department of State. Pervasive government corruption and the government’s willingness to unilaterally end business deals like recently blocked the $40m Liberia Traffic Management concession, even after they have been passed into law, has left a chill among investors.

Cummings underscores the importance of creating an enabling business environment.

“We got to create the environment,” says Cummings. “Nobody will come if the environment is not conducive. Because we will be attracting the right and legitimate business people. People who make their money the right and the hard way. Not black money people.”

Indeed some international investors told NN/FPA that they are excited at the prospect of a Cummings’s government.

“Electing Alexander Cummings would be a beacon of hope for Liberia’s investment climate,” says one U.S. investor who requested anonymity for fear of being expelled from Liberia. “His presidency would signal a new era of stability, innovation and opportunity, attracting capacity and fostering partnerships that will pave the way for Liberia’s future. His anticorruption stance would be a breath of fresh air for the business community which faces daily bombardment, threats and harassment from Weah’s various ministries, his inner circle and the National Investment Commission.”

Cummings says cracking down on corruption will be a priority. Scores of government officials in the last two administrations have been dismissed for corruption and never prosecuted. Cummings says that impunity will end. “There will be punishment for people who steal, who took the government’s money, no matter who you are.”

To discourage corruption Cummings says he will pay civil servants living wages. He will rationalize custom fees to facilitate trade and introduce a simplified flat-rate container fees at the Freeport of Monrovia to enhance accountability.

Cummings promises a vibrant private sector that allows Liberians to participate actively in the economy alongside foreign investment. He says reforming the Liberian economy is not complicated. The key is appointing competent professionals to key positions, simplifying import and export tax collection processes, and harnessing technology for efficiency.

Cummings says his administration will focus on ecotourism and agriculture to fuel economic growth. He will prioritize ecotourism as a job creator and income generator. He plans to empower farmers through cooperatives, transitioning them from subsistence farming to mechanized agriculture.

On education, Cummings says his administration will prioritize teacher training and development across all educational levels, from primary and secondary schools to universities. He will invest in technical and vocational training, offering young people options besides university for training in plumbing, masonry, and electrical work. He will boost adult learning to help Liberians build the skills for new jobs in the economy.

Transitional Justice

In addition to cracking down on corruption and building the economy Cummings is one of only two leading contenders to commit to holding a war crimes court to prosecute alleged perpetrators of the civil wars. (Tiawan Gongloe is the other). The court was a key recommendation of the 2009 Truth and Reconciliation Commission but neither Nobel laureate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who served as president for 12 years, or her successor, Weah, have supported the court’s establishment.

Cummings first backed a court during his 2017 run saying he acknowledged the contentious nature of the issue but felt it was necessary to deliver accountability and restore Liberians’ trust in their government.

Richmond Wleh says Cummings is exceptionally qualified for the presidency.

Still, critics continue to question Cummings’ lack of political experience. Joseph Walker, a Unity Party supporter, says Cummings could have been a competent president had he consented to occupy other governmental positions, such as a lawmaker or vice president, both of which Cummings has refused.

Walker points out that President Weah faced rejection by the electorate in two successive presidential bids before his eventual election. Weah only secured the presidency after serving as a senator for three years.

“If Cummings had agreed to go as a running mate to former Vice President Boakai, it would have been the only one round ticket we would have had in this election,” says Walker predicting that a Boakai-Cummings ticket would have won on the first round. “But with Cummings being on his own and Boakai on his own, Cummings should be aware that little Tiawan Gongloe could beat him up.”

Enoch Bartuah, a member of the Weah’s CDC party, says Cummings lacks an understanding of governmental intricacies, claiming the Liberian Government surpasses the complexity of “even ten” Coca-Cola companies.

Cummings has seen larger crowds in the first weeks of the campaign than last time, a sign his supporters see as hopeful. Cummings says voters have had a chance to see his rivals in office and they have seen them fail to deliver improved lives for Liberians. He is confident they will be willing to give him a go. With no public opinion polling it is difficult to assess who is leading the race. The election campaign, already plagued by turmoil, has five long weeks to go.

MONROVIA – The Standard Bearer of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP), Mr. Alexander Cummings on Tuesday, September 5, visited several market halls and places, in District # 2, Montserrado County, with marketers everywhere complaining about the harsh business environment and the urgent need for relief.

Cummings’ nearly six hours toured started from the Omega Market in Paynesville, to the Mount Barclay Community Market, the Nimba United Community Market, and the Johnsville Market districts, with marketers clamouring to see him and shake hands with him.

Marketers jubilated as they led Cummings and entourage on a guided tour of their respective markets, lamented the difficult business environment, and the deplorable and unsanitary conditions of the various market communities in District # 2.

The CPP Standard Bearer change agenda for economic recovery includes a U$20 million loan scheme for Liberian entrepreneurs including market women to sustain and grow their businesses which, he said, will start rolling out within the first one hundred days of his Presidency, beginning on October 10.

Mr. Cummings has also promised to enforce the Liberianization policy, which sets aside certain businesses exclusively for Liberians.

The Omega Market is the most densely populated area with an estimated 10,000 marketers, predominantly women of the Kpelleh, Gio, Mano and Grebos ethnic groups mainly engaged in the sale of Agricultural produce.

The Mount Barclay Community Market, constructed by government and the Nimba United Community Market constructed by Bishop Nimely Donyen, have huge voting populations, followed by the Johnsonville market District.

Cummings empathized with the marketers over the deplorable state of affairs which, he said is negatively impacting their businesses, but said, there is great hope with his election as the next President to replace the inept leadership of President George Weah.

Cummings assured Liberians that the CPP Leadership will prioritize economic recovery for massive job creation, through support for a strong and vibrant private sector, controlled by Liberians.

The CPP Standard Bearer’s six-hour encounter with marketers, street peddlers, and ordinary citizens, in District #2, Montserrado County, distributing posters and sharing his vision for real change in Liberia, attracted hundreds of bystanders who hailed him for the new style of political campaign of person-to-person engagement.

PAYNESVILLE – With the upcoming presidential and legislative elections just two months away, political parties are ramping up their campaign efforts nationwide, drawing large crowds to rallies characterized by musical performances and speeches.

By: Gerald C. Koinyeneh – gerald.koinyeneh@frontpageafricaonline.com

However, Alexander Cummings, the standard bearer of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) , unlike his rivals’ tactics, has taken a distinctive approach to his 2023 campaign activities in Montserrado by personally visiting voters in their communities and engaging with them directly. On this tour, he has been accompanied by enthusiastic supporters, many of whom rush to embrace him for hugs, handshakes, and fist bumps.

“We find out that the Jehovah Witnesses-styled campaigning is the most effective style of campaigning because it leaves a lasting impression on the person, ” said Lafayette Horatio Gould, Spokesperson of the CPP national campaign team.

“In these big rallies, people don’t often get to ask questions. They just assemble and talk down [supporters]. It is good to interact and ask [electorate] personal questions and feel them for yourself. That is why we are choosing that side of campaigning, particularly in the urban area.”

Since the launch of his campaign a little over a fortnight ago, Mr. Cummings and his entourage have visited several communities and have had a one-on-one conversation with residents including youths, first-time voters, and the elderly.

On Wednesday, Cummings continued his community engagement in Montserrado County District #9. He was greeted by a jubilant crowd that chanted pro-Cummings slogans and marched along with him and the CPP Representative candidate in District #9 Fubbi Henries.

Twenty presidential candidates are participating in this year’s elections, the fourth straight polls since the end of the civil war two decades ago. Opinion polls by both electronic and print media organizations placed Cummings amongst top major contenders including incumbent President George Weah, former Vice President Joseph Nyumah Boakai and renowned human lawyer, Cllr. Tiawan Gongloe.

These candidates, along with their supporters, are employing all strategies to woo voters. However, some have been criticized for inducing their crowds. Recently, an executive committee member of the governing CDC, Chief Cyril Allen, criticized his party’s campaign team for allegedly trucking supporters to their campaign rallies in western Liberia.

The CPP said its strategy is intended to connect directly with the electorate.

“This strategy (Jehovah Witnesses-style) is most effective because it presents a personal touch to the campaign. It allows people to be in touch with the candidates that they will be voting for. It also gives the candidate the opportunity to experience some of the realities people are faced with in the communities,” Gould, former Chairman of the Alternative National Congress said.

Last week, Mr. Cummings, accompanied by his running mate, Cllr. Charlyne Brumskine marched alongside first-time voters in District #6, seeking their support for both himself and CPP representative candidate, Mr. Martin Kollah.

The community interaction, spanning over four hours, commenced from GSA Road Junction near ELWA Junction, extending to the intersection connecting GSA Road with Duport Road and Rehab. During the tour, Cummings and Brumskine distributed campaign materials, including stickers and flyers, and held conversations with a diverse group of voters, including the elderly, first-time voters, motorbike and Keke riders, as well as taxi drivers.

Hundreds of predominantly first-time voters joined Cummings and Cllr. Brumskine, displaying banners and chanting pro-Cummings slogans. Addressing the first-time voters, Cummings urged them to believe in their ability to bring about real change and encouraged them to cast their votes in support of himself, Brumskine, and Kollah.

The CPP strategy appears to be resonating well with voters. “We appreciate Cummings for coming to us. He is the first candidate to walk through our community and to talk to us directly. I was not his supporter. But for this reason, I am his fan now,” said Israel Kollie, a resident of GSA Road in Paynesville.

Joshua Davies, an ardent Cummings’ supporter and a first-time voter said he is impressed with his (Cummings) track record, and with his experience, he is confident that if given the opportunity, Cummings will be a great president.

Said Davies: “I am always fascinated by Mr. Cummings. Looking at his record. Coming from Liberia and becoming Vice President of one of the largest private companies in the world tells you that he can lead and serve in any position and succeed. That’s why I am supporting him.”

National campaign spokesperson Gould said he is optimistic the CPP will deliver this time. “We have a clear pathway to victory. This will be a consequential election, no doubt, it will be very competitive. But we are engaging our supporters.”

He is hopeful that voters will choose Cummings over his nearest rivals.

“for those who have not made up their mind, it suggests that they will put a lot of thought into it. For the UP [Unity Party], they represent second chance, the CDC represents second chance. We are the only real change. We are very likely to be in a runoff.

PAYNESVILLE – Collaborating Political Parties’ Standard Bearer, Alexander Cummings, is intensifying his grassroots engagement strategy with voters across Montserrado County. Accompanied by his vice standard bearer, Cllr. Charlyne Brumskine on Saturday, Cummings marched alongside first-time voters in District #6, seeking their support for both himself and CPP representative candidate, Mr. Martin Kollah.

Addressing the first-time voters, Cummings urged them to believe in their ability to bring about change and encouraged them to cast their votes in support of himself, Brumskine, and Kollah.

He said, “To the young people and first-time voters, you are the future of Liberia. And it is because of your votes that we will win District #6, we will win the President’s district, and we will put Alexander Cummings and Martin Kollah on Capitol Hill. Thank you, God bless you, and God bless Liberia.”

Cllr. Brumskine echoed this sentiment, rallying young people to elect Alexander Cummings, assuring them that she would be an instrumental partner to Cummings if elected.

“Mr. Cummings is the right choice for Liberia. He has the experience and what it takes to improve your lives for a bright future. You will go to school, learn the right skills, and improve your business. I am only here to lend my support, and that’s what I will do when you elect us come October,” she affirmed.

Mr. Kollah expressed optimism in the party’s chances in the October elections, attributing the massive turnout and strong support to the resonance of Cummings’ message among the electorate.

Joshua Davies, a staunch Cummings supporter and a first-time voter, cited Cummings’ impressive track record and experience as reasons for his support.

Cummings’ community tours have been marked by warm receptions since its kickoff last week in Districts 10. On Tuesday, the CPP Standard Bearer, accompanied by hundreds of partisans, supporters, sympathizers, and well-wishers, visited District #10, Montserrado County, amidst massive jubilation by residents, marketers, shop owners, and citizens who welcomed his visit and shouted slogans like, “Cummings is the man we want.”

The next day on Wednesday, he received a warm welcome from hundreds of residents of District #14, which includes Vai Town, Gibraltar, Clara Town, Cow Factory, Abuja, and the Doe Community on Bushrod Island. It was the same on Thursday, August 24 when he stormed the Borough of New Kru Town.

The campaign continues in other parts of the Montserrado this week before kicking off the tour of the counties.

MONROVIA – The Standard Bearer of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP), Mr. Alexander Cummings, received a warm welcome on Wednesday, August 23, from hundreds of residents of District #14, which includes Vai Town, Gibraltar, Clara Town, Cow Factory, Abuja, and the Doe Community on Bushrod.

Cummings and his entourage were joined by hundreds of CPP supporters and sympathizers from the various communities during his tour of District #14 as part of a community engagement initiative to interact with citizens and rally their support for his Presidential bid in October.

Accompanied by a large crowd, Cummings began his walk from the Clara Town Store, making brief stops at the Varnee Mosque and the Feed My Sheep Church. At these stops, he passionately appealed to both the Muslim and Christian communities to pray fervently for God’s divine guidance to help Liberians choose good leaders on October 10.

Liberians, wearing CPP t-shirts from adjacent communities in Freeport, Paco Yard, Cow Factory, and other areas, carried banners displaying photos of Mr. Cummings and Vice Standard Bearer, Counsellor Charlyne Brumskine, while chanting slogans in support and solidarity with the CPP.

The CPP Standard Bearer also made a brief stop in District #14, where he had personal encounters with residents, shared his campaign posters, and explained his vision for economic prosperity and alleviating hunger and extreme poverty in Liberia.

The five-hour tour and engagement with citizens of District #14 concluded with a special program in Doe Community, where the CPP Standard Bearer reaffirmed his commitment to good governance and working hard to revive the ailing economy through massive job creation.

Despite heavy rain on August 22, partisans and supporters held up CPP posters while residents rushed to meet and greet Cummings. The residents expressed great appreciation for the visit, with some citizens saying they had long awaited the visit of the CPP Standard Bearer.

Cummings and his entourage paraded through the various streets of District #10, passing through Oldroad, Chugbor, Smythe Road, and Gaye Town, shaking hands with residents, shop owners, pedestrians, and marketers, giving them hope for a better Liberia under Cummings’ leadership.

A Gaye Town resident, identified as Varney Hoff, and a market woman in Chugbor, identified as Precious Kollie, spoke highly of Mr. Cummings and his strong desire to alleviate extreme suffering and poverty among Liberians.

The visit to District #10 by the CPP Standard Bearer was part of his community engagement to meet citizens and solicit their views on the prevailing socio-economic conditions of families and communities in the lead-up to the general elections on October 10.

Cummings is the leading opposition presidential candidate, enjoying significant popularity, especially among female voters and young people, who constitute about 65 percent of Liberia’s estimated five million population.

The CPP Standard Bearer, Cummings, with great energy and enthusiasm, has been conducting early morning walking exercises since the start of the national campaign on August 5, which has gained popularity with hundreds of his supporters joining in the activity.

The tour of communities in Montserrado County District #10 by the CPP Standard Bearer culminated at its National Headquarters with a festive ceremony.

Cummings expressed gratitude to the hundreds of partisans, supporters, sympathizers, and well-wishers for their continuous show of support and solidarity, reassuring them of victory on October 10.
