Monrovia, Liberia – The Women’s Under-17 football national team of Liberia will face Senegal on Sunday, May 19, 2024, at the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex in the second leg of the 2024 FIFA Women’s U17 World Cup qualifiers. Liberia is going into the clash needing to win 2-0 to advance to the next stage of the qualifiers following a 3-1 defeat away from home on May 11. Coach Sekou Munuba’s girls, since their return from Senegal, have moved to camp at the George Weah Technical Center and have been training extensively to secure a win and qualify over Senegal at home. The Lone Star Women’s U17 team head coach told the media in Senegal after his side’s defeat that his players gave a good account of themselves against a tough opponent and believes they can get the job done at home.

“The girls played well and from what I saw, we can secure a win at home and even qualify over Senegal,” said Munuba. “I am very positive about my squad, and you could see a high level of coordination. I am very impressed with my team and the result of the game, and I am confident that at the end of the day, the result will be favorable for us.”
He believes it’s payback time for Liberia against Senegal when they come to Monrovia. He apologized to Liberian fans for the 3-1 defeat to Senegal in the first leg but is optimistic about making a comeback in Sunday’s match. He, however, praised the Senegalese team, saying they were very physical, but after the first leg, he and his technical staff have learned how to approach the second leg on Sunday. According to Sekou, who is a former Liberian international, there is a huge prospect in the Liberian team that can develop in years to come if the right support is given. He is calling on Liberians to turn out to cheer their team on Sunday because it will serve as a major motivation for the team.
The return leg is the third round of African qualifiers for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic 2024. The FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup is set to take place between October 10 and November 3, 2024, with African teams eager to emulate the impressive performances of the senior African women’s national teams at the recent FIFA Women’s World Cup.
