The Iron Ladies secured the league title with a game to spare after a convincing 4-0 victory over V. Brakay on Sunday at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS) in central Monrovia.
World Girls, who were relegated to the lower league at the end of the 2022/2023 season, demonstrated their dominance by securing 21 wins, one draw, and one defeat in 23 matches, accumulating 64 points to clinch the championship.
Coach Famata Dean’s team started the match strong, with forward Ativor Holali scoring a first-half brace to give the Iron Ladies a 2-0 lead. Despite efforts by V. Brakay to reduce the score line after the break, World Girls’ defense remained impenetrable.
Holali completed her hat trick in the second half, skillfully navigating through three defenders before finding the back of the net. Prior to her third goal, star midfielder Hawa Fatomah scored with a long-range shot, sealing the 4-0 victory for World Girls FC.
A short award ceremony followed the match, where the champions walked away with numerous accolades. Ghanaian forward Ativor Holali won both the Golden Boots for highest goal scorer and the Most Valuable Player award. Coach Famata Dean was named Best Coach, while Loretta Sackie won Best Defender, and Lorpu Forkpa was named Goalkeeper of the Season.
World Girls’ remarkable performance, including their Orange Cup run and Lower Women’s League triumph, solidified their reputation as the most exciting and best-performing team in the top two divisions of Liberian women’s football. They scored the most goals, suffered the fewest defeats, and recorded the most wins throughout the campaign.
Following a year in the lower league, the Iron Ladies will return to the Upper Women’s Division. They will conclude the season with a final game against Republic FC this weekend.
Meanwhile, World Girls II has been crowned champions of the 2023/24 Nimba County Lower Women’s League. The team from Scalepea City clinched the championship unbeaten on Sunday, June 30, 2024, after a 3-0 win over Denton Girls FC of Karnplay City at the St. Mary’s Sports Pitch in Sanniquellie.
