This win, combined with a draw for second-place Jubilee FC, confirmed Wologizi’s promotion to the First Division with four games still to spare.
The match, held at the D-Tweh Field on Bushrod Island, saw Wologizi take an early lead, with Francis Doe scoring in the 3rd minute and converting a penalty just three minutes later to make it 2-0. Maxwell Kelleh added a third goal, assisted by Doe, but Mighty Enforcers pulled one back in the 44th minute to reduce the deficit to 3-1 at halftime.
In the second half, Wologizi dominated. Substitute Kiafa Sheriff assisted in all three of Doe’s second-half goals, completing his hat-trick and adding an extra goal. Kelleh scored a brace, and Sylvanus Momodu rounded off the scoring, making it 7-1.
With the win, Wologizi increased their points tally to 65 from 25 games, securing the title 13 points clear of Jubilee FC, who were held to a 3-3 draw by Pags FC. The team’s impressive season, including 21 wins, 2 draws, and only 3 losses, has earned them promotion to the top flight.
This achievement marks the second time Coach Jasper Benfelix has led a team from the Second Division to the First Division, his first success coming with Cece United. Benfelix, who resigned from Nimba Kwado after their relegation last season, joined Wologizi FC and fulfilled his mandate in his first season.
In an interview with FrontPage Africa, Benfelix expressed his satisfaction with the team’s promotion and championship win, calling it a response to those who had criticized him when he took on the job.
“A statement of justification, Champion for the second time, same fashion with 4 games to play. I was tagged a failure, called names negatively. Today I’ve proven again what focus and chasing of a dream is all about,” Benfelix said.
He added that despite receiving offers from bigger clubs in the First Division, he chose Wologizi because he wanted to prove his abilities with an unknown club.
With this victory, Benfelix underscored the importance of determination, focus, and competency in achieving success, stating, “Promoting two teams and winning the Second Division championship in three years is about competency, focus, and determination.”
