The Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA) confirmed the decision in a formal statement to the National Scrabble Association of Liberia (NASAL) on May 1, citing Liberia’s strong bid and the association’s growing reputation in promoting the sport.
The tournament will be held at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex Conference Centre and will mark the first time Liberia hosts Africa’s most prestigious Scrabble event.
“We are delighted to announce that the National Scrabble Association of Liberia has been awarded the hosting rights,” PANASA stated. “We commend NASAL on their compelling bid and look forward to working with them to deliver a successful championship.”
The announcement was first shared by NASAL President Lester Dgian Morris via social media, calling the news “historic” for the country. NASAL expressed deep appreciation to PANASA and the broader African Scrabble community for the trust placed in Liberia.
“This is a proud moment for Liberia,” NASAL said in an official statement. “We embrace the opportunity with humility, excitement, and a full commitment to deliver a world-class tournament.”
The association pledged to immediately begin preparations, promising a fair, well-organized competition and a celebration of African unity through Scrabble.
Liberia’s bid gained momentum following the successful hosting of the National Scrabble Championship in April in Kakata, where Joseph Gegeh claimed the national title with 22 wins from 27 games, followed by Malek Sirleaf in second place.
The previous African Scrabble Championship was held in Kigali, Rwanda, in 2024, with Nigeria’s Oluwatimilehin Doko emerging as the winner.
Scrabble has a long history in Liberia, dating back to the 1960s. Today, the country boasts more than 10 active Scrabble clubs and over 50 rated players, reflecting a vibrant and competitive scene.
