Monrovia, Liberia – Liberia’s Women’s U-17 football team is one step away from reaching the 2024 World Cup. The Liberian team secured a hard-fought qualification over Senegal to reach the last six of the qualifying rounds.
Despite a 3-1 defeat in the first leg away from home, the Liberian side put their house in order to beat Senegal 2-0 on home soil on Sunday and advanced to the final qualifying round on the away goals rule.
The crunch stage of qualifying for the 2024 U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic has arrived, with six African nations vying for the three remaining places. After a series of two-legged playoff ties, Burundi, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Zambia, and Liberia have progressed to make up the “Final Six” in the CAF qualifying competition.
Burundi booked their place with an 18-0 aggregate demolition of Djibouti, while Kenya saw off Ethiopia 3-0 in the second leg after a goalless first encounter. Those two nations will now face off over two legs, with the first match taking place on June 7th.
Morocco also navigated their way through in emphatic fashion, following up a 4-0 first leg win over Algeria with the same scoreline in the return leg to set up a meeting with Zambia. It promises to be a mouth-watering tie, with the young Zambians aiming to emulate the success of the senior national side after beating Uganda 2-1 on aggregate.
Liberia, who overcame Senegal on the away goals rule after winning 2-0 to overturn the 3-1 deficit from the first leg, will also compete in the final qualifying round.
Reigning U-17 world champions Nigeria predictably proved too strong for Burkina Faso, winning 13-1 over the two legs. Their incentive is a duel with the other qualifying nations for a spot in the World Cup.
The three victorious nations from the final qualifying phase will book their spots at the U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic. The first legs take place on June 7, with the return matches scheduled for June 14 across the continent.
