
Monrovia- Grand Gedeh and Nimba County football teams Wednesday secured their spots in the quarterfinals of the 2025 National County Sports Meet.

Both counties kept their perfect start to the traditional tournament with a win and a draw in the second match. The ‘Zuluwisky Boys’ defeated Montserrado 2-1 in Zwedru to make it two wins out of two so far.
Grand Gedeh, who on the opening day beat Grand Kru 2-1, knew a win over the City Boys of Montserrado would seal them through to the last eight and did not disappoint their fans as they collected all three points to book the first slot in the group.
In the second match at the Albert White Stadium in Zwedru, Margibi left it late to beat Grand Kru 1-0 with a Kindness Cole free kick goal.
Grand Kru, who lost their first game to Grand Gedeh, are out of the tournament, while Margibi will need a win in their last game against Grand Gedeh to seal their qualification. Montserrado will be hoping that Margibi lose and they win Grand Kru with more than two goals to go through.
In Robertsports, Grand Cape Mount County, Nimba settled for a goalless draw with defending champions River Gee to book their quarterfinal spot.
The Mountaineers, who beat hosts Cape Mount in their first game, now have four points from two games, securing their place from a group made up of three counties.
Hosts Cape Mount will now need a win over River Gee to advance to the quarterfinals, while defending champions River Gee will need just a draw to secure their qualification.
Both Cape Mount and River Gee will come face-to-face on Saturday in the last match in the group that will determine the final spot from the group.
For her part, Bong County bounced back from their opening day defeat to Grand Bassa and pulled a convincing win over Bomi County Wednesday. The Kpatawee Boys brought back smiles on their people’s faces with a 3-0 win over the Blue Lake Boys.
On the other hand, Grand Bassa suffered a defeat at the hands of Maryland County in day’s late kickoff in Bong county.
The boys from Maryland surprised everyone to beat Grand Bassa 2-1 to open up the zone and take the qualification slots to the last day.
With Wednesday’s results, Bong County will need a win over Maryland to advance to the quarterfinals, while Maryland also will need a win to secure their quarterfinal slot.
Bassa will be hoping for a draw in their next game and hope Maryland doesn’t lose.
At the James E. Green Stadium in Sinoe County, hosts Sinoe County’s hope of an early qualification didn’t happen as they failed to get a win over Lofa County.
Lofa County came from a goal down to seal a 2-1 win with Emmanuel Flomo and James Tarpeh getting the goals for the boys from Wologizi.
Rivercess were 1-0 winners over Gbarpolu County to keep their hopes alive of reaching the quarterfinals.
Rivercess, whose last game is against Lofa, will need a win, while a draw for Lofa will see them through.
Sinoe will need to beat Gbarpolu County who have just a point from two games.
Kickball
In the kickball category, it was an intense showdown when the girls from Grand Bassa County and Maryland County settled to a thrilling draw on Wednesday, January 15.
The match, held at the David Kuyon Sports Stadium, showcased both teams’ talent and determination, much to the delight of a spirited crowd.
The game kicked off with high energy as players from both counties demonstrated their skills.
Grand Bassa Kickball team currently top Group A table with 4pts, with Maryland County occupying last place with 1point.
The Grand Bassa Kickball team will face Bomi County this Saturday in their last match.
