The South Eastern team took the game to Maryland, scoring three goals in the first 24 minutes, stunning the fans in attendance. Nuch Zohn netted a brace in the first half, and an additional goal from their striker helped the Zulu Whisky Boys edge closer to the final.
Maryland County pulled one back with a penalty just before halftime, leaving the score at 3-1 going into the break.
After the restart, Maryland piled on pressure in an attempt to equalize, but Grand Gedeh’s defense stood firm.
Despite several attempts on goal, Maryland could only manage to reduce the deficit to 3-2, thanks to solid defensive work from Grand Gedeh.
Having reached the semi-finals after a penalty shootout win over Grand Cape Mount County, Grand Gedeh will now face the winner of today’s semi-final match between Lofa and Margibi Counties.
This marks the first time in over a decade that Grand Gedeh has reached the final, and they are determined to claim the title for their people and the entire southeastern region.
While Maryland may have been eliminated from the tournament, they earned respect as one of the strongest teams, with 80% of their squad hailing from the county. The team’s performance will be remembered as one of the best in Maryland’s football history.
Grand Kru Advances to Kickball Final
In the kickball category, Grand Kru County secured its spot in the final after defeating Bong County 6-3 in home runs.
Grand Kru took an early 2-0 home run in the first two innings and held onto it through the break. Despite Bong County’s efforts to equalize, Grand Kru’s defense proved too strong. Bong County managed to score three home runs, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Grand Kru’s solid performance, as they sealed a 6-3 victory without needing to attack in the final innings.
The Jerry Varney Girls’ team from Grand Kru will now await the winner of today’s semi-final match between Grand Bassa and Grand Gedeh.
The tournament is set to conclude on Sunday, February 2, 2025.
