
Monrovia –George O. Weah, (doesn’t have a relationship with former president Weah) scored his first goal for Liberia football Association second division outfit DownTown FC as Jasper Kun’s side claimed a much-needed 2-0 victory over Cece United in the LFA second Division League.

DownTown went into the match after being eliminated from the Orange Cup, and needed to put in a performance on their return to action.
United had a decent start to the game, but Downtown FC’s defense stood their ground in the opening minutes.
The home side Downtown FC took the lead In the 20th minute through a cool finish from Sulaiman Sesay. Cece United came close to getting the equalizer three minutes later, but missed a free header to the surprise of the United fans.
Downtown FC could have extended their lead in the 27th minute but their striker Joseph Toe missed a free header.
The City Boys of Downtown kept asking questions but the United keeper was excellent in goal, making several key saves in the first half.
Downtown held on to their lead as the first half ended 1-0. After the interval, CeCe United reconsolidated and had Downtown FC defending more but United strikers were wasteful in front of goal.
With pressure on DownTown FC coach, Jasper Kun introduced Weah into the match.
His introduction paid off as he was so lively down the flank, making several crosses in the box for Sesay and his attackers.
The fast moving Weah missed a gifted opportunity, following Fred Gaye’s cross from the left flank but Weah’s effort was saved.
The Downtown FC summer signing Weah put the game to bed in added time when he cleverly dribbled past the United keeper to score his first goal for his new club. The substitute wrapped up the win for Downtown FC with a thumping finish to end the match 2-0.
Speaking to FrontPage Africa newspaper after the game, the former Monrovia Club Breweries and NPA Anchor winger said he was delighted to be back on the pitch after a long time out.
“I am over excited to see my teammates cheering me for such a brilliant goal.
The mentality we have here is great, not enough time to prepare, but seeing us playing like this shows we are ready.
“I made up my mind coming into today’s game I realized that for long I have not given my fans what they should get so I was determined to score no matter the time,” he said.
According to the winger, fans should expect great things from him this season, just like he did with Monrovia Club Breweries in qualifying the team to the first division and winning the FA Cup.
