The tournament, aimed at fostering unity among Grand Gedeh County’s eight administrative districts, was organized under the patronage of Aaron David Togba. The event showcased the power of sports in bridging divides and promoting peace among the people of Grand Gedeh.
The week-long competition featured teams from Gbao, Gboe-Ploe, B’hai, Cavalla, Tchien, Konobo, Glio-Twarbo, and Putu districts, allowing local players to showcase their talents. Gbao District clinched the championship and secured a prize of $100,000, while Cavalla District took second place and received $75,000. The third-place prize of $25,000 was awarded to another deserving team.
During the closing ceremony, Togba emphasized that the tournament served as a tool for reconciliation. He stated, “This is a platform to heal wounds, promote understanding, and unite our people. We must confront the divisions and mistrust that have held us back.”
The tournament took place against the backdrop of past conflicts in Grand Gedeh, including the mysterious disappearance of National Election Commission official Alfred T. Dunner, the arson attack on Senator Zoe Emmanuel Pennue’s home, and rising youth drug addiction.
Togba called on the community to use such initiatives to pave a new path for peace and development. He promised that the Gbao Saypleekon tournament would become an annual event, with the next edition scheduled for November 2025.
Contributions were also made by District #3 Representative Jacob C. Debee, who donated LRD100,000, and District Representative Jeremiah Garwo Sokan, who donated $1,000 USD, reflecting a commitment to grassroots initiatives and community development.
The tournament distributed a total of $226,000 in prizes to honor both team and individual achievements: Champions (Gbao District): $100,000; Second Place (Cavalla District): $75,000; Third Place: $25,000; Most Disciplined Team: $10,000; Most Valuable Player: $7,000; Highest Scorer: $5,000; and Golden Glove Winner: $4,000.
Further addressing the audience, Togba urged young people to channel their energy toward building the county and encouraged leaders to prioritize merit over patronage.
“We need to stop the infighting and work together for a stronger Grand Gedeh,” he said. “Our future depends on creating opportunities for everyone based on their capabilities, not their political affiliations,” he stated.
