Down Town FC secured a 2-0 victory on Saturday, July 6, in the return leg of the LFA third division regional playoff against Grand Cape Mount County-based third division side Kandakai FC at the Tusa Field Sports pitch in Gardnerville.
The Montserrado County runner-up scored both goals in the first half through strikers Samuel Boe and Gabriel Omale, maintaining their lead until the final whistle. Kandakai FC forced Down Town FC to a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Cape Mount County but failed to qualify as Down Town FC proved their supremacy by collecting all three points.
After the match, Down Town FC head coach Jasper Kun attributed his team’s victory to their tactical ball control and finishing touches. Kun urged his players to focus on their next game and give their best effort to advance further in the competition.
“Thanks to my players for our 2-0 victory against Kandakai FC, but I want them to keep up their physical training as part of their preparation for our next game. It was through their physical training that we overpowered our opponents in our recent match,” Kun said.
Coach Zico Dorley of Kandakai FC blamed his team’s failure on their inability to capitalize on scoring chances in both halves but acknowledged that the game was fascinating and demonstrated that his players can improve.
“This is our first time participating in the LFA regional third division playoff, and even though we are out of the league, my players have learned a lot from their opponents. We are going back to the drawing board to put our house in order for next season,” Dorley said.
In another third division regional playoff encounter on Sunday, July 7, 2024, Brewerville-based third division side Kemokai FC secured their spot in the last 16 after defeating Cape Mount County-based third division side Kon Town FC 2-0.
