The tournament, which kicked off on May 9 at Jaysaw Field, featured four participating schools: Cestos High School, Green Pasture High School, Neegba Public School, and Cestos United Methodist High School. Organizers confirmed the games serve as qualifiers for the National Regional Championship, scheduled for Sinoe County.
In the football final held on May 13, Cestos High School edged past Neegba Public School 1-0 to claim the football crown and advance to the Region 4 Championship. Green Pasture High School, after an early 2-0 win over Cestos High, continued their strong form and secured the kickball title with a 10-7 win over Neegba.
Earlier in the tournament, both football semifinals were decided by penalty shootouts after 1-1 draws. Cestos High edged Green Pasture 5-4, while Neegba advanced past Cestos UMC with a 4-3 win.
Meanwhile, attention has shifted to River Gee County, where six schools are competing in that county’s High School Championship: Tweh Jaiklay, Gbeapo Multilateral, Flanagan Methodist, Kelvin Sorem, Webbo, and AGM high schools.
In the opening football and kickball matches in Fish Town and Kanweaken, Gbeapo and Tweh Jaiklay schools dominated, advancing to the finals set for June 13. The River Gee tournament was briefly suspended to accommodate the ongoing WASSCE exams.
Winners in River Gee will advance to the Region 5 Championship in Grand Gedeh County, joining champions from Maryland and Grand Gedeh counties.
The National High School Football and Kickball Championship is a Ministry of Education-sanctioned initiative aimed at promoting sports-based education and expanding youth engagement through interschool competitions across Liberia.
