Monrovia – FrontPage Africa has been informed that the Liberia Chess Federation is finding it difficult to travel for the World Chess Olympiad in Hungary.
The Liberian delegation of 16 persons is expected to leave the country this Monday, September 9, 2024 if all the financial issues are settled by the government of Liberia to participate in the 45th edition of the international chess competition.
Speaking to FrontPageAfrica newspaper over the weekend, LCF President, Thomas Karyah, said the government of Liberia is yet to provide money for the team’s departure.
According to him, officials of the Chess Federation have been engaging the government of Liberia through the Ministry of Youth and Sports since March of this year.
“We been into this for months without hope and we are expected to leave tonight but no support” he said in a tearful mood.
Speaking further, Karyah called on the government and humanitarian organizations to support the federation for their travels.
“We are in desperate need at the moment and we need around US$80,000 to travel, ” he said.
According to Karyah, if the government can support the team it won’t be a regret because the players have promised to do their best in the tournament. “Our players are upbeat about a better result and we can assure Liberians that we will finish in the top 100 at the end of the tournament” he ended.
