Monrovia – The former National Chairman of Unity Party USA has condemned what he described as threats to the peace, security, and stability of the Republic of Liberia by officials and fanatical surrogates of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC).
Fredrick Samuel Gibson, Sr. criticized the latest threat contained in the address of former President George Manneh Weah on July 31, 2024, during which Weah vowed that the CDC would use every means at its disposal to stop the UP-led government from undermining the rule of law and threatening Liberia’s peace.
“As the former Chairman of UP USA, I want to make it crystal clear that it is Mr. Weah and his CDC fanatics who have consistently threatened the peace and security of the country by orchestrating a systematic campaign aimed at castigating and vilifying the government, instigating civil disobedience, inciting protests aimed at causing unrest, and other forms of disruptive activities to distract the government from implementing its development agenda,” Gibson said.
Gibson noted that since the defeat of former President Weah and his cohorts in the 2023 democratic election, these “disgruntled individuals” have embarked on a campaign to terrorize the country, creating the impression that Liberia is ungovernable, unstable, and unfit for investment.
“I am sending out a clarion call to the people of Liberia, the sub-region, and the world at large to scrutinize the sinister and satanic machinations of this gangster and mafia group styling itself as a grassroots political party, with the view of stopping it from wreaking further damage on the socio-economic and political landscape of the country,” he added.
Gibson passionately appealed to Liberians to support President Boakai and his government in their efforts to recover from what he described as the six years of misrule, misery, and catastrophic plundering of the nation’s resources under Weah and his CDC allies.
Gibson expressed disbelief at the irony and contradiction of Weah, who claims to be a man of peace and a champion against corruption, yet threatens the very peace and security of the state while resisting anti-corruption efforts.
He accused Weah of attempting to circumvent the law to avoid accountability, stating that Liberians in the diaspora are alarmed by the trajectory of events and the lack of opposition support in the fight against corruption in Liberia. He particularly criticized Weah’s recent call to rally his base for insurrection and disturbance of the peace.
Gibson warned that Weah’s “reckless and unguided” utterances pose a threat to peace and security not only in Liberia but also in the subregion and beyond. He called for de-escalation and constructive engagement between the government and the opposition to improve the lives of the Liberian people.
“The cry of witch hunt by Mr. Weah and his followers is fake. If cleaning up the mess his inept governance created in Liberia is a witch hunt, then UP USA fully supports that witch hunt and calls on President Boakai to intensify the process,” he said.
Gibson declared his full support for the ARREST Agenda, which includes dismantling corruption, reinforcing the rule of law, respecting human rights, and protecting the inalienable rights of the Liberian nation. He urged the opposition to actively participate in improving the general welfare of the Liberian people.
