Monrovia – The Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY) has expressed serious concern over the ongoing stalemate in Liberia’s House of Representatives, which has disrupted essential legislative activities and stalled critical government functions. With 43 representatives reportedly holding separate sessions in protest of Speaker J. Fonati Koffa’s leadership, the legislative deadlock has put important national issues on hold, prompting widespread calls for resolution and reform.
“We are seeing a situation where essential government work is left undone, which directly impacts the lives of everyday Liberians, especially the youth,” said Banica Elliott, President of FLY. “Our lawmakers were elected to represent the people’s interests, and they must find a way to work together, set aside personal grievances, and focus on the needs of the nation.”
The current impasse has drawn intervention from the Supreme Court, which has called for due process in addressing the concerns of lawmakers and bringing stability back to the House. FLY expressed appreciation for this step, viewing it as an important move toward transparency and accountability. However, Elliott underscored the need for Speaker Koffa to address the grievances voiced by his colleagues to restore trust in the legislature. “Ignoring the legitimate concerns of his fellow representatives would only deepen mistrust and further divide the House,” Elliott said. “We urge Speaker Koffa to listen, and at the same time, we ask that his colleagues respect his right to due process as we seek a fair, balanced resolution.”
In addition to concerns over the legislative gridlock, allegations of potential conflicts of interest surrounding Speaker Koffa’s reported affiliations with major concessionaires have intensified calls for an investigation. There are also reports suggesting that some lawmakers may have accepted bribes to support the Speaker’s removal, raising alarm about integrity within the legislative body.
“These are troubling allegations that must be addressed transparently and thoroughly,” Elliott stated. “Liberia’s citizens deserve leaders who uphold integrity, accountability, and dedication to the public good. We call on relevant authorities to carry out a fair, impartial investigation into these bribery claims to protect the sanctity of our legislative process.”
As Liberia’s youth organization, FLY emphasized the damaging impact of this crisis on democratic values and expressed concern about the example it sets for future generations. “Our young people look up to these leaders, and the current stalemate undermines the very foundation of our democratic values,” said Elliott. “Now more than ever, our leaders must put aside any personal or partisan considerations and come together to work for the nation’s welfare.”
FLY has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting efforts toward dialogue, unity, and transparency in resolving the crisis, emphasizing the need for leaders to move forward in a manner that serves the country’s best interests. “Liberia cannot afford further division and stagnation,” Elliott said. “Our young people deserve to see leaders who can rise above conflict, prioritize accountability, and focus on building a brighter future for all Liberians.”
