ALCOP came fourth in during the just ended Presidential election but it is yet to decide who to give its support to during the run-off election.
The group of Islamic women mostly from the Mandingo tribe is Co-chaired by Mariam A Sumaworo and Chaired by Fanta M Fofana.
Speaking Tuesday the chair of the group Miss Fofana asserted that based on the working of President Weah over the last six years it is prudent to have the President reelected.
The Chairlady of the group said their organization has played many pivotal roles in the Islamic communities adding that they have now positioned as influencers in their various environments.
“Fellow Liberians, Ladies and gentlemen of the press; we have gathered here today in kindness, considering the importance of this election, to call on our parents, brothers, sisters, and our respected elders in the Mandingo and Muslim communities to please see a reason to as ask ALCOP to endorse the re-election bid of President George M. Weah in this run-off election,” Fofana said.
She added: “The reason for us kindly appealing to our respected elders including the Imams in our cherished Mandingo and Muslim communities to support the re-election of President Weah is as the result of President Weah’s many contributions towards us and the community general.”
Listing some of President Weah’s contributions to the Islamic community, the group says in 2019, President Weah sponsored over 100 Muslims to observe the pilgrimage.
She added: “Since the President’s ascendency to the highest in our land, President Weah has regularly sent his support to the fasting Muslim during the holy month of Ramadan.”
Fofana named the reconstruction of the Islamic Quranic reading Center located in RedLight Community after it was gutted by fire as some of the reasons to reelect the President.
President Weah has always granted Muslims in his government to observe whenever their prayers time, the group said adding that it never happened in the past governments.
“President Weah is the first person to practice such good governance,” she said.
Fofana continues: “President Weah has also created the office of Muslim advisor to the president. This is the first of its kind in the history of Liberia.”
She stressed that under Weah’s Administration, the Ministry of Education has always closed all Public schools in observance of Ramadan and Abraham Days.
The Government of President Weah according to Fofana is currently building an Islamic School in Jacob Town District #2.
The donation of several solar lights and an ambulance to Quardu Gboni, a District that is heavily dominated by Mandingoes and Muslims, and the appointment of many individuals from the Islamic community are some of the things the group says are unprecedented.
“That needs commendations from us as Muslims and Mandingoes. President Weah once lived with us as Mandingoes and we never discriminated against him,” Fofana says.
