
PARIS, France – Liberia’s Ambassador to France, H.E. Dr. Teeko T. Yorlay has held a meeting with Mrs. Celue Doe-Addo, daughter of the late President Samuel K. Doe, at the Liberian Embassy near Paris.
According to a release from the Liberian Embassy in Paris, their discussion centered on Liberia’s ongoing national reconciliation process, spearheaded by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, and the importance of addressing historical grievances to achieve lasting peace and unity.
Key highlights of the meeting include national healing and reconciliation Initiatives. Ambassador Yorlay reaffirmed President Boakai’s commitment to national healing, citing ongoing efforts to honor former Presidents William R. Tolbert and Samuel K. Doe, both victims of political violence. The initiative aims to foster unity, promote forgiveness, and bridge historical divides in Liberia.
Role of the Doe Family in Reconciliation
Ambassador Yorlay encouraged Mrs. Doe-Addo and the Doe family to play an active role in the reconciliation process, recognizing her late father’s significant contributions to Liberia’s history.
On her personal Reflections and commitment to peace, Mrs. Doe-Addo shared her personal journey, recalling how she fled Liberia at the age of seven during the 1990 civil conflict. She expressed a deep commitment to reconciliation and highlighted her ongoing efforts to establish a foundation that fosters unity among historically opposed families, particularly the Doe and Quiwonkpa families.
First Visit to Liberia in 35 Years
Mrs. Doe-Addo revealed that she plans to return to Liberia for the first time in 35 years. Her visit will include renovating her mother’s grave in Bomi County, engaging local communities in Nimba County, a region with historical significance in Liberia’s political conflicts, and holding discussions with local leaders to promote peace and reconciliation, with support from Ambassador Yorlay.
Diplomatic and Government Support
Ambassador Yorlay assured diplomatic support for Mrs. Doe-Addo’s reconciliation efforts. He pledged to facilitate meetings with key Liberian officials, including Senator Nya D. Twayen, Jr., and other leaders in Nimba County, to foster dialogue and promote sustainable peace.
