MONROVIA – The Rotary Clubs in Liberia have launched a maternal and child health program at the Harrisburg Clinic in the Careysburg district, Lower Montserrado County.

The program was launched on Monday, October 24, 2022, by the President of the Rotary Club of Monrovia, Rtn. Mai Urey. Speaking at the launched, Rtn. Mai Urey stressed that the funding for the project will provide support for traditional midwives, a much-needed revolving drug fund for the ready supply of essential drugs and the establishment of a Big Belly Business Club.
Giving the overview of the project, Rtn C. Gyude Bedell, Director of Rotary Service Projects, indicated Rotary’s continued concern for maternal and child health; saving mothers and children, and added that the Clubs are proud to partner with the Ministry of Health through the Montserrado County Health Team, to reduce the high maternal and infant mortality rate in Liberia.
He said the maternal and child health program at the Harrisburg Clinic is expected to serve over two thousand pregnant women within the Harrisburg community and its immediate environs. Much of the interventions will involve the regular engagement of health stakeholders in the Careysburg district.
In remarks, the President of the Rotary Club of Sinkor and representative of Rotary Clubs in Liberia, Rtn. Decontee King-Sackie used the occasion to assure pregnant women that the establishment of the ‘Big Belly Business Club’ will assist them to get the necessary health information and care during their pregnancy up to delivery and a specified time after. She further emphasized the importance of the drug-revolving fund that will ensure the routine supply of medicines to help treat pregnant women and children.
The Montserrado County Health Team acknowledged the presence of their partner, Rotary Clubs in Liberia, and assured them of their unflinching support to work with the Clubs to ensure a healthy future for mothers and children.
Following the launch of the project, the Clubs distributed treated mosquito nets to adolescent pregnant women as part of the second phase of their malaria awareness program with an initial supply of 40 copies of the Big Belly Business books also presented to the Clinic.
