Monrovia – Gbarpolu County District #2 Representative, Cllr. A. Kanie Wesso, has called for the immediate investigation and prosecution of the men linked to the humiliating treatment of two women in Numopoh, Sinoe County on allegations of witchcraft.
Rep. Wesso described the video of the two women, stripped naked and being publicly whipped, which is widely circulated on social media as appalling.
He noted that such humiliation of women must never be condoned in the Liberian society where women are still struggling to gain their rightful place.
This inhumane act, Rep. Wesso has condemned it in the strongest terms against those women, who he said are mothers and their rights should be respected irrespective of any allegations levied against them.
In a release issued in Monrovia, over the weekend, the Gbarpolu County lawmaker is quoted as saying, “Let it be known that any act of trial by ordeal (sassywood) is illegal and will not be tolerated and the law must take its course on individuals involved with such”.
Cllr. Wesso, however, called on all women of Liberia and around the world to condemn such uncivilized act as such places a dark cloud and public disgrace on womanhood and disregard for the rule of Law. “This act indicates a public disgrace to all women and it must not be taken lightly. Let the Government of Liberia act immediately”.
