At the program held in the Borough of New Kru Town recently, Rep. Seibo said the gesture is in fulfillment of his campaign promise as well as a ‘bold step in changing the face of New Kru Town.’
He said contrary to the public’s perception that nothing good can come out of communities such as the Borough of New Kru, Town, West point, Clara Town and Logan Town, he and others were able to grow up successfully to make positive impact to the larger society.
He attributed their successes to the power of education and noted that it was against this background that he has committed to assisting needy and deserving children in his district to attain quality education.
“The only way we can change the face of New Kru Town is when we have more kids going to school-and not just to go to school, but to become very excellent in everything that they do. It is based on that, we said during the campaign that if we try in the first year to send at least five or ten young people from every community in our district to school, then in the next six years, we will have educated more than 2,000 to 3,000 young people. And we are determined to do that. And today marks the beginning of us doing that,” he declared.
Speaking further he called on the beneficiaries, ranging from elementary to junior high levels to be studious and maintain the average so that they can continue to benefit.
He asserted that they were privileged to enroll and as such, they should work hard to stay on the scholarship program, or they will be replaced by qualified students.
He then used the platform to call on the parents to ensure that their children are in school and paying attention to their lessons.
He clarified that although he won a hotly contested seat with just 25 percent, he was now the Representative of every resident of Montserrado County District #16.
Based on this, he said, it is incumbent on him to impact the lives of everyone, and that is why the selection of the 300 students was done by the community leaders from every part of the constituency.
He assured the administration of the 48 schools that are collaborating with the scholarship foundation that the foundation will live by its side of the bargain.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the River Gee County Legislative Caucus, Rep. Francis Dopoe lauded his colleague and longtime friend for the initiative and challenged the students to emulate the footsteps of their lawmaker by maintaining the high standard he (Rep Seibo) has set over the years.
He described the students as the best and valuable reserve for any nation and called on the society to invest in them.
Rep. Dopoe: “It is very much important to invest in education. Today I heard people saying all over the place about reserves. And when I When asked for our reserves, I am told that they are Gold, Iron ore and Diamond.”
“To me, they are not reserved; our children are our reserves. This is because the minerals can be worthless at times, but human beings will never be worthless. So, if it’s left with me, you can mortgage everything in this country, accept the future of our country, our children. We can use the money to educate them.
Residents including parents and community leaders lauded Rep. Seibo for living up to his promise and pledged their commitment in making sure that the goal of the program is achieved.
