Monrovia – As searches continue for hundreds of people missing during recent mudslide near Freetown, the National Muslim Women Caucus of Liberia (NAMUWCA) has identified with neighboring Sierra Leone through its Embassy near Monrovia.
Binta Barry, national Secretary General of the group, who signed the book of condolence, said the move was intended to showcase a true sense of solidarity with its closest neighbor.
Madam Barry, who headed the delegates yesterday, August 29, to the Sierra Leone Embassy in Congo Town, conveyed deepest sympathy on behalf of all the Muslim women in the country.
She said the move is also predicated upon the long standing ties between Liberia and Sierra Leone as well as personal relation with Muslim women in that country.
“As believers, we all know that this is a trail time from the Almighty and we do sincerely hope that it will only serve to strengthen our faith in him.”
“We pray He will have mercy on all those that perished. Give their families strength and faith to recover and bless them with more than what they expect,” she said.
The group consoled the government and people of Sierra Leone especially family members of hundreds of mudslide victims and recalled Sierra Leone’s numerous interventions during troubled times of Liberia.
Presenting an envelope to the Sierra Leonean Embassy, Haja Mawatta S. Toure, chairperson of the group noted that it was a sign of solidarity to a friendly country like Sierra Leone.
“The group hopes the resilience always shown by the people of Sierra Leone during periods of calamity will be manifested this time,” she said.
In response, an official of the Embassy Dr. Rosaline Turay, head of chancery affairs, who spoke on behalf of the Ambassador expressed gratitude and appreciation to the group for the gesture.
Madam Turay said the visit during their time of trouble demonstrates a true solidarity from the Liberian people.
“We are one people, two different countries with the same culture. NAMUWCA visit indicates that they are with us in these moments of grief,” she said.
