Paynesville – The Youth Network For Positive Change (YOUNETPO), a youth-led non-profit organization, has launched a two-day training for civil society organizations (CSOs) on Inclusive Transitional Justice for Women’s Human Rights Defenders in Liberia.
By Francis Boayue
The training, which started on Tuesday, March 4, is aligned with President Joseph Boakai’s Executive Order No. 131, issued on May 2, 2024, establishing the Office of War and Economic Crimes Court.
Supported by the Women’s Peace & Humanitarian Fund of the United Nations and Conciliation Resources, the training aims to strengthen the capacity of CSOs to advocate for inclusive transitional justice in Liberia.
It focuses on equipping participants with knowledge of human rights frameworks, policy engagement strategies, and actionable plans for advocacy and community involvement.
YOUNETPO Executive Director Leo Tiah emphasized the vital role of Liberian women in the successful establishment of Liberia’s transitional justice process, particularly in the operation of the war crimes court.
He outlined that the Diverse Women in Liberia’s War Crimes Court project is designed to ensure the full and equitable inclusion of diverse women in the transitional justice process. The initiative aims to amplify marginalized voices, address historical injustices, and safeguard rights within the broader context of post-conflict justice and reconciliation.
In her remarks, Cllr. Vivian Neal, Assistant Director and Gender Officer at the Office of War and Economic Crimes Court Liberia, extended greetings from her office. She highlighted the critical role of youth and women in sustaining the establishment of the war crimes court in Liberia.
