MONROVIA – The United Workers Union of Liberia (UWUL) has elected its new leadership to lead the group for the next three years. The election coincided with its third annual convention in Monrovia.
The union was established in 2011 with an aim to unite workers in both private and public sectors to champion the plights of workers in various workplaces and ensure their rights and welfare are well taken care of.
Those elected include Patrick K. Wisseh, president, Harry Z. Gaye, vice national president, Dave Seneh, Secretary-General, Daniel K. Weah, Sr, Deputy Secretary-General for Administration, Jamea D. Sorbor, Deputy Secretary General for Operations, and Grace B. Neah, Financial Coordinator.
All were elected unopposed.
The Africa Regional Secretary of International Transport Federation, Mahammed Dauda Safiyanu, speaking at the occasion, cautioned the elected officers to be open, transparent, and inclusive.
He emphasized the need for information sharing, which he said are virtues necessary for the trade union sector in various workplaces.
Under the theme “Workers Resilience Amidst Crisis,” convention was launched on Thursday at the Monrovia City Hall by Labor Minister, Cllr. Charles Gibson.
Minister Gibson lauded UWUL for unifying the workforce of Liberia and identified job creation as the best way to promote someone’s life, adding, that the ministry is committed to ensuring that competent Liberians have work to do whether in the public or private sectors.
“We must create jobs for our people instead of giving them hope more than employment, because when a man is employed it will not only be a help to him but his family as well will benefit through the job given,” Cllr. Gibson said.
