According to reports, the inmates overpowered prison guards, prompting the U.S. Embassy to advise American citizens to take precautions.
“Contact local law enforcement in the event of an emergency or to report suspicious activity. Be aware of your surroundings and monitor local media for updates,” the embassy’s statement urged.
The U.S. Embassy’s alert followed confirmation from the Liberian government of the jailbreak, with the Ministry of Justice confirming that a total of 47 inmates had escaped. Initial investigations suggest that a security breach at the facility allowed the prisoners to flee.
In response to the incident, the Ministry of Justice has launched an investigation in collaboration with the Liberia National Police and prison authorities to determine the cause of the breach. The ministry has also pledged to implement enhanced security measures to prevent future escapes.
Expressing concern over the situation, the ministry assured the public that all efforts are being made to recapture the escapees swiftly. Additional police forces have been deployed to assist in search and apprehension operations across the region.
In a public statement, the ministry reiterated that ensuring the safety of citizens remains the government’s top priority. It also encouraged anyone with information on the whereabouts of the fugitives to come forward, reminding the public that aiding or harboring escaped prisoners is a serious crime.
“We urge the escaped inmates to surrender voluntarily at the nearest police station or prison facility to avoid facing further legal consequences,” the Ministry of Justice warned.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to upholding law and order, stating that no acts of lawlessness will be tolerated. It called on the public to remain calm and supportive of government efforts to maintain peace and security.
As the search continues, the Ministry of Justice has promised to provide regular updates and thanked the public for their cooperation in ensuring national safety.
