Monrovia – With only eight months left until the General and presidential elections in October, National Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman Emeritus, Chief Cyril Allen, is calling for President George M. Weah to take decisive measures against underperforming members of his government who are also members of the Grand Coalition.
As the Chairman of the Governing Council of the CDC, of which the NPP is a constituent member, Allen believes that President Weah must remove or suspend these officials if he hopes to secure a second term in office.
Despite some progress in areas such as health, education, infrastructure, and energy, Allen believes that the President must take steps to address the effectiveness of government functionaries who are not performing to the best of their abilities.
According to Allen, the coalition government is made up of three political parties and other collaborating political groups, and only those who are dedicated to helping the government succeed should be allowed to serve. He gave the National Legislature a poor performance rating of 40%, blaming their poor diligence and lack of regular visits to their constituencies.
In order to improve the coalition’s chances in the upcoming elections, the NPP has signed a new document that allows each constituent party to select their own candidates during the primary. This is a departure from the previous system, where candidates were handpicked by a select few individuals.
With citizens becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the current members of the National Legislature, Allen believes that the elections provide an opportunity for change and for citizens to correct previous mistakes.”
