Monrovia – Members of the Liberia National Student Union(LINSU) Monday, September 16, staged a protest in front of the Ministry of Education in Sinkor, Monrovia calling for the immediate resignation of Minister Ansu Sonii.
Reading the statement, the president of LINSU, Mohammed Gandhi Kamara said that all efforts to meet with the government, specifically the Minister of Education, to mitigate the many challenges the educational sector is faced with has not yield any results.
“LINSU has come to realize the unwillingness of the MOE under the leadership of Min. D. Ansu Sonii to professionally and amicably remedy the national and international embarrassment confronting the educational sector due to poor leadership,” Kamara stated.
They are asking for the resignation of Minister Sonii on 10 counts.
Some of the counts include the inability of the Minister to intervene in the hike in tuition and fees of academic institution, the reduction of allowances of international scholars by 75% and the refusal of the Ministry to execute the mandate of the Educational Reform Act.
The student group also mentioned the inability of the MOE to monitor and evaluate private and public schools, the lack of logistics for public high schools since the ascendency of the present Minister and the inconsistency in public schools tuition and other fees, among others.
When asked by our reporter, what will LINSU do if the Minister of Education fail to resign, the president of LINSU said that the students of Liberia will continue to come up with strategies to make sure that Minister Sonii resigns his position.
Meanwhile, LINSU is calling on the government to find solutions to the challenges the economy is faced with in the soonest possible time.
“The effects of this backward economy on the educational sector cannot be condoned anymore. The future of any country is predominantly dependent on the progress of education,” Kamara said.
