
Buchanan β A disturbing incident occurred on the evening of March 19, 2025, in Grand Bassa District when a man, who is allegedly claiming to be a former U.S. Marine, reportedly held a team of Chinese miners at gunpoint for unknown reasons.

According to eyewitness accounts, the man arrived at the mining site in an American vehicle. He then proceeded to threaten the miners, tying them with ropes while pointing a firearm at them. The alarming incident took place in the Mat House Community, Grand Bassa District #1, around 7:00 PM.
Upon learning of the situation, Grand Bassa Superintendent Karyou Johnson acted swiftly and led a team from the Grand Bassa Police Detachment to the scene. However, by the time they arrived, the suspect had already fled, escaping before authorities could intervene.
In response to the incident, Sup. Johnson instructed the Liberia National Police (LNP) to initiate a rapid investigation and to locate and arrest the individual who is allegedly claiming to be a former Marine. The motive behind the suspectβs actions remains unclear, but authorities are determined to uncover the truth and hold the individual accountable.
Local residents have expressed concern about the safety of foreign workers in the region, and this unsettling incident has raised questions regarding security protocols at mining sites.
