Monrovia – The Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) has suspended the unauthorized “expedited connection service fee” of $150.00 charged by the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC).
LERC confirmed that this fee was not authorized and violates the Commission’s regulations.
In a statement, LERC ordered LEC to immediately halt the collection of this unauthorized fee from customers requesting expedited connections. The Commission has also launched an investigation to evaluate the legality of the fee and determine the reasons for its imposition without prior approval.
“We are committed to ensuring electricity services are affordable and accessible to all Liberians,” stated Atty. Kla-Edward Toomey, II, Acting Chairman of the Board of Commissioners. “This action underscores our responsibility to protect consumers and ensure utility charges are fair and transparent.”
LERC has scheduled a meeting with LEC management to discuss the matter and ensure the utility complies with the directive.
The Commission also warned other utilities to refrain from imposing unauthorized fees and pledged to take further action against any entity found in violation of its regulations.
