The ANC described the incident as a stark reminder of the dark days of Liberia’s past, and calls for collective insurance that Liberia does not slip back into the years of carnage and gangsterism.
The ANC in its statement sayid it firmly believes that there is a better way to enforce the law and certainly a more constructive way to react to disagreements.
“Liberia is a nation for all its citizens, not just for CDCians or UP partisans to engage in destructive confrontations. We must rise above partisan divides and work together for the greater good of our country,” the statement stated.
Police on Thursday August 22, 2024 fired teargas into the compound of the CDC in an attempt to quell demonstrators who were in return pelting stones at the police.
The police had gone in the vicinity of the Congress for Democratic Change to aid the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency, which was riding ghettos and drug users.
CDC on the other hand alleged that officers of the LNP entered into their party headquarters and began firing teargas, which prompted their reactions.
But the ANC however condemned the violence in the strongest possible terms and called on the government to act responsibly and fairly.
“It is imperative that an independent commission be instituted to investigate the fracas and make its findings known in the shortest possible time,”
The ANC in its statement said citizens of Liberia deserve transparency and accountability, and there must be consequences for such massive disruptions and the injuries inflicted upon the people and State.
The ANC says it stands with the victims of Thursday violence and their families. “We extend our deepest sympathies to those who were injured and affected by this senseless act. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time,”.
“Enough is enough. We cannot allow our beloved nation to be torn apart by violence and lawlessness, the statement said.
The ANC said it is time for all Liberians to come together and demand better from the leaders and its people.
“We must strive for a peaceful, just, and prosperous Liberia where the rule of law prevails and every citizen feels safe and valued,”.
The ANC said it remains committed to working towards a brighter future for Liberia. “We urge all political parties, civil society organizations, and citizens to join us in condemning violence and advocating for peace and justice.”
