Monrovia – The opposition leader of the Alternative National Congress (ANC), Mr. Alexander Benedict Cummings, is saddened about the death of 28 Liberian Muslims, mostly children, who were studying Arabic at the Bassa Town Quranic Recitation Center, located in Paynesville City.
“Well, we have to sympathize with the bereaved family and the Islamic Community for such a loss. All we can do is to continue praying for the souls of those who were involved in the disaster to rest in peace, and that God should receive them,” Cummings said.
“We know the pains they are feeling right now and we also share similar pain.”
Neighbors of the Islamic school woke up early Wednesday morning to the cries of occupants of the building, which had been gutted by fire. They cried to be rescued from the burning building.
Community members told FrontPageAfrica there was no means to rescue them.
However, four persons narrowly escaped death and two who were badly injured are currently undergoing medication at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Sinkor.
The ANC’s political leader, who joined scores of other Liberians, including government officials at the 17 Street Mosque in Monrovia, Wednesday, to sympathize with the Islamic Community during a funeral service for the deceased, spoke of how the incident brings sorrow to Liberians.
He called on other Liberians to join members of the Islamic Community to pray for the peaceful repose of the souls of the dead, most of whom are ‘innocent children.’
The Alternative National Congress Political Leader also wants the death of these Liberians to be of concern to all and called.
“We just need to continue praying so that our country cannot experience such an incident,” Cummings hoped.
Mr. Cummings saw his presence at the funeral service along with President George Weah as a ‘good step’, in spite of their political disagreements.
According to him, political leaders must put aside their differences whenever such a situation occurs, and everyone’s concern is needed.
