The initiative, which will offer medical screenings and surgeries, is aimed at assisting hundreds of citizens facing various health issues. The medical team consists of 11 Spanish doctors, who will work alongside their Liberian counterparts at various health facilities across the county.
The partnership was officially launched on Wednesday, April 2, at a local hotel in Paynesville, just outside Monrovia. During the launch, Senator Moye underscored the importance of such initiatives in addressing Liberia’s healthcare challenges.
“This partnership is vital in filling the gaps in our healthcare system, especially following the reduction in U.S. support to key sectors under the Trump administration,” Senator Moye said. “With partners like Doctors Without Borders, we can ensure the well-being of our citizens, and we are proud and appreciative of this collaboration.”
Senator Moye also emphasized that citizens from other counties residing in Bong would benefit from the free medical services. He expressed his gratitude for the partnership and pledged continued support from both the executive and legislative branches to enhance its impact.
“We must continue to seek assistance for the betterment of our citizens. This partnership is a critical step, but it is not the end. We will continue to work together to improve healthcare in Liberia,” Moye added.
Dr. Catherine Thomas Cooper, Liberia’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO), highlighted the significance of the collaboration between the government and Doctors Without Borders. She noted that the initiative would not only benefit the patients but also provide valuable skills transfer to Liberian healthcare workers.
“We are grateful for the return of Doctors Without Borders to Liberia,” Dr. Cooper said. “This will allow our doctors and nurses to enhance their skills, which is crucial in improving the quality of healthcare delivery in the country.”
Dr. Cooper also addressed the financial barriers that many citizens in remote areas face when seeking medical care, and praised the free operations as a critical support for those unable to afford treatment.
Martha Morris, the Deputy Minister for Administration at the Ministry of Health, expressed her excitement about the project. “We are delighted that Doctors Without Borders is starting their mission in Bong County, and we look forward to them reaching more counties in Liberia,” she said.
Antonio Satorra, the team leader and general surgeon for the visiting Spanish doctors, assured the public that the team would perform significant surgeries, with more than 100 patients expected to benefit from the operations in Bong County. He thanked Senator Moye and other county leaders for their support and expressed optimism about the mission’s impact.
“We are committed to doing as much as we can to help the people of Bong County,” Satorra stated. “We are ready to start immediately and carry out these life-saving surgeries.”
