Monrovia – The National Post-Basic Community Health Curriculum, developed by the Liberian Board for Nursing and Midwifery (LBNM), has been commissioned in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, paving the way for Training Institutions in Liberia to begin enforcing.
LBNM was established in 1949 by an Act of legislation to set procedures, guidelines, and standards for the accreditation of Nursing and Midwifery Training Institutions, with this, they are the only legal authority responsible to develop nursing/midwifery basic and post basic curricula.
On December 16, 2024, the Board, in Monrovia, adopted the Post-Basic Community Health Curriculum for the National Community Health Services Supervisors (CHSS), a document the Board argues conforms with national, regional, and global standards.
It said the curriculum is harmonized and synchronized for all nursing and midwifery programs in the Country.
At the commissioning ceremony, the Registrar of the Liberian Board for Nursing and Midwifery, Madam Cecelia Kpangbala-Flomo, said the three days Dissemination and Commissioning of the National Post-Basic Community Health Curriculum marked the institutionalization of a transformative curriculum the Board and partners took months to develop for use by said institutions in Liberia.
“What we have done here this week is interact with all accredited schools in the Republic of Liberia; because the accreditation process starts with the identification of training leads and down to the institutionalization”, Madam Kpangbala Flomo asserts.
The LBNM registrar heaped praises on the IRC/USAID for the support, the technical and expert contributions from the National Technical Working Group, National and International Consultants, and the Ministry of Health, for the achievement which is set to revolutionize nursing and midwifery education in Liberia.
“We thank all our partners, supporters, and participants for their dedication and commitment to advancing healthcare education in Liberia. Together, we’re building a healthier and brighter future through the Liberian Board for Nursing and Midwifery commissioned “National Post- Basic Community Health Curriculum”
The Chairman of the Liberian Board for Nursing and Midwifery, Mr. Humphrey Gibbs Loweal, said the new curriculum offers a forward-thinking and comprehensive approach to community health through alignment with National Health Priorities, introduction of Evidence-Based Practice and Research, strengthened role of Nurses and Midwives, professional registration and licensure, focus on critical thinking and innovation, and support for professional development.
“The CHSS curriculum is to prepare nurses and midwives to tackle global health challenges and contribute to the sustainable development goals as well as Liberia’s achievement to the universal health coverage and also promote equitable healthcare delivery system” Mr. Loweal stated.
According to him, the CHSS Post-Basic/Specialty Program is granted in the principles of public health and nursing, thus incorporating global health perspectives.
With the Commissioning, the National Community Health Services (CHSS) Post-Basic/Specialty Program Curriculum is now being implemented at accredited institutions with no part of the curriculum prohibited from alteration by any individuals or institutions without prior approval from the LBNM.
