Fendall, Montserrado – University of Liberia’s newly inducted President, Dr. Layli Maparyan, has emphasized inclusivity, innovation, and global engagement as bold and transformative visions for the institution.
In her acceptance speech as president of the University of Liberia, Dr. Maparyan pledged to steer the university toward a brighter future, building on its legacy as one of West Africa’s cornerstone institutions of higher learning.
“This journey is not easy, but with all of us working together, students, faculty, staff, and alumni, we will ensure that the University of Liberia remains a beacon of hope, knowledge, and progress for generations to come,” Dr. Maparyan let out.
She underscored the importance of collective effort in the university’s transformation and recognized the contributions of every group within the university, as well as calling for collaboration and sacrifice to ensure growth.
“To the students, I see you. I understand the struggles you’ve faced to be here. To the faculty, I see your passion for knowledge despite limited resources. To the staff, you are the backbone of this institution and to the alumni, you are ambassadors of this great institution,” she averred.
Dr. Maparyan spotlighted the resilience and dedication of all members of the university community, whom she credited for keeping the institution afloat through challenging times.
She expressed gratitude to her predecessors, acknowledging their significant contributions to the university’s development, and lauded Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh for establishing the university’s endowment fund and former President Dr. Emmett’s Dennis for rehabilitating the Fendall campus and fostering international partnerships.
The UL’s new president further commended Dr. Ophelia Weeks for launching the Gender Studies Program and Dr. Julius Nelson for transitioning the university to a tuition-free model for Liberian undergraduates.
“Each of my predecessors has contributed invaluable work to push the university forward, and for that, they deserve commendation,” she stated.
Hence Dr. Maparyan has outlined a vision of inclusivity and innovation, aiming to make the University of Liberia a leading institution on the continent.
She stressed the importance of creating opportunities for all students, regardless of their background, and ensuring that education remains accessible.
“My vision for the University of Liberia is one of inclusivity, innovation, and global engagement. I believe in the power of education to transform lives and societies,” she declared.
Dr. Maparyan’s prior work with the university, including developing its Gender Studies Program and securing a $5 million USAID grant, reflects her long-standing commitment to gender equality and sustainable development.
According to her, the cornerstone of her presidency will be fostering global partnerships and securing sustainable funding for the university as she stressed the importance of international collaboration in advancing UL’s mission and equipping students to thrive in a globalized world.
Dr. Maparyan underlined the need for her administration to prepare students to lead in a world defined by technological advancements, climate challenges, and interconnected economies.
Dr. Maparyan’s connection to Liberia began in 2009 when she first visited the country for a colloquium on women’s empowerment.
This initial visit sparked a deep bond with the country and its people, culminating in her current role as UL’s president.
“From the moment my feet touched Liberian soil, I felt an electric sense of elation, an undeniable connection to this country,” she reflected.
Meanwhile, Dr. Maparyan has called on the university community to join her in working toward a shared vision of excellence and to build on the legacies of those who came before her.
