Monrovia – Students of the Liberia Christian Association of the Blind (CAB) have contradicted recent comments by the head of the school by telling FPA that Kwame Wreh, the suspect who reportedly raped 13-year old Princess (not her real name), was a braille study class teacher at the institution.
Beyan Kota, head of CAB, recently said in a press release that Kwami has neither been an instructor of the institute nor has he ever served in the employ of the association’s programs.
The CAB authority said they had no previous knowledge regarding Kwami’s involvement in any sexual abuses of students on campus nor did any act of such concerning Kwami claimed the attention of the Association at any time whatsoever.
The school consented that “Little” Kwami Wreh enrolled in the school in 2004 and later had to drop out due to his failure to focus on the school lessons.
But students at the institute said Kwame was last seen at the institution 2015/16 year when he served as brailed study class instructor for students.
The students confirmed that Kwame was a student but later returned to helped the institution and was paid by CAB.
CAB had earlier said that the suspect was seen on the campus in 2004 and had rarely attended the school activities, but the students said he was last seen on the campus 2016.
“He thought us braille after school in 2015/2016 and we only heard that the school asked him to leave,” one student, who did not want to be named, said.
According to them, Kwame was asked to leave the campus of CAB to avoid damaging the institute reputation.
The students said the sexual abuse of Princess is the responsibility of the school, as they are exposed to anyone at all times due to no security.
The center has no fence as the visually impaired students are left vulnerable with over three entry points that have only a security guard at the main entry.
Meanwhile, Princess has requested that the school be investigated and or shut down or have another faculty.
“I want it because there is no security and we are exposed there,” she said.
Not the first Rape
She recalled one of her friends who was raped by another 21-year- old student but was only told to cut grass.
Princess is asking for more security and a fence to avoid intruders and sexual predators that would intrude the campus with the purpose of abusing its students.
“As a visually impaired person you are not seeing anyone, so if someone walks up to you and start to squeeze your breast or take you to an unknown area, it is bad, so it is the school’s administration that should put in a policy to safeguard female students,” she said.
Government probe
The Government through the Ministry of Gender Children and Social Protection has assured the family that they will be fully engaged in the investigation and the Sex Gender-Based Violence section has been asked to do a full report of the situation.
The Ministry said other collaborating ministries will be included to bring justice to the victim and family.
