Sumo was apprehended on April 21 during a routine immigration enforcement operation conducted by the Washington, D.C. field office of ICE in Fairfax County, Virginia. Authorities say Sumo was illegally residing in the United States at the time of his arrest.
In a social media post, ICE said law Sumo is one of three individuals detained during the operation, which ICE says was part of ongoing efforts to apprehend fugitives and individuals in violation of U.S. immigration laws.
ICE’ social media post read: “Eric Sumo is a fugitive wanted for document fraud in his home nation. His charges included fraudulent U.S. visa possession and manufacturing.”
“He was one of three arrests in a Fairfax County, Va., routine daily immigration enforcement operation April 21. 51-year-old Liberian national illegally present in the United States Arrested by ICE Washington, D.C.”
It remains unclear whether the Liberian government has formally been informed Sumo’s arrest but U.S. authorities are said to be working closely to determine the next legal steps, including possible deportation or extradition.
