Monrovia – Tension is said to be building in River Gee County as citizens are opposing the latest nomination of some local county officials by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. The citizens are accusing the county Senator Conmany Wesseh of masterminding the appointment singlehandedly.
In an interview with FrontPageAfrica, Mr. Alex Hawkings Younge, Acting Chair of the River Gee County Youth Empowerment Initiative, said, their accusation against the River Gee senator is based on a FrontPageAfrica publication where it was reported that Senator (Wesseh) had forwarded the name of one Dickson Donmo for Mayor of FishTown.
Mr. Younge said Senator Wesseh was caught on camera instructing the Internal Affairs Minister to appoint Dickson Donmo as mayor. The River Gee Youth said the citizens are requesting the County Legislative Caucus to disassociate senator Wesseh from the Caucus. In a telephone conversation, the newly appointed Mayor, Donmo promised to comment on the matter at a later date..
Recently President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf appointed several local officials including; Mr. Philip Nyenuh Superintendent, Mr. James Sarsih, Asst. Supt for Fiscal Affairs Mr. Seide Weiah , Asst. Supt for Dev., Gbaepo Statutory Dist., Mr. Albert Watoson Asst. Supt for Dev, Tienpo Stat. District Mr. Matuaslah Hinneh Commissioner, Gibsonville, Nyenebo Dist. And Mr. T. Dickson Donmo City Mayor, Fishtown City.
Among the nominees the citizens are protesting the name of Mr. T. Dickson Donmo City Mayor, Fishtown City whose name was mentioned in the FrontPageAfrica News article. According to the citizens he (Donmo) former paymaster was accused and investigated for stealing hundreds of thousands of Liberian dollars of civil servants’ salaries.
In a communication in the possession of FrontPageAfrica to Minister Ambulai Johnson Minister of Internal Affairs, dated November 17, 2008 from Cllr. Peter B. Jallah recommended the suspension of the local pay master (Mr. Dickson Donmo) to face a criminal investigation.
In a communication also in possession of FPA dated December 2, 2008 Mrs. Estelle Liberty than Deputy Minister for Administration Ministry of internal Affairs suspended the than paymaster and instructed the than Superintendent J. Karku Sampson to ensure that the living body of Mr. Donmo is provided for investigation.
Senator Wesseh Liberia’s former Minister of State without Portfolio, won Liberia’s first Mid-term senatorial election in River Gee County, beating his closest rival, former soccer star Jonathan Boy Charles Sogbie by a margin of 953 votes.
The tally, according to the official website of the National Elections Commission (NEC), is the result from all 77 of the county’s polling centers.
Before he was elected Wesseh worked in several key positions in government including ambassador. He resigned his post in accordance with the Code of Conduct for Executive employees, and currently occupied the seat vacated by Senior Senator Fredrick Doe Cherue of the Unity Party who decided not to seek a second term.
