Grand Bassa County – A driver employed with the Last Mile Health in was on Saturday, September 21, discovered dead in Jacob Larteh Town, District #1, Grand Bassa County after he went missing for three days.
Last Mile Health, a non-for-profit health organization, provides health care services to several rural communities across the country.
Dr. Anthothy Tucker, Grand Bassa County Health Officer, told FrontPage Africa that the driver, named David Nylantee, went missing on Wednesday, September 18, and was discovered dead after three days of search.
“The victim, Mr. David Nylantee carried some Community Health Service Supervisors to be deployed in district 1 but the time was late and so David called his office to let them know that he couldn’t make his way back to Buchanan,” Dr. Tucker said.
“There is a policy at Last Mile Heath that does not allow their vehicles to travel at night and so the office consented that the victim spend the night and return to Buchanan the next morning which was Thursday.”
Tuckere furthered “David Nylantee was provided a room at the clinic in Jacob Larterh Town to spend the night but the next morning the victim couldn’t be seen.”
The CHO mentioned that the “mysterious disappearance” of the driver was shocking.
Villagers and health workers took three day to search for him but was he later discovered dead in a location almost an hour walk away from where he was given to sleep on Saturday, September 21.
“We as health workers were shocked when we heard the death news because it was the victim’s second time to drive staffs of Last Mile Health in that area,” he said.
Garrett Hubbard, Country Director of Mile Health, in a phone interview confirmed that the organization has taken responsibility of catering to the family of the deceased as investigation into his death is launched by the Police.
“It is not good news for Last Mile Health because our mission is to help save lives not to loss lives mysteriously,” Hubbard said.
He said that the NGO will also be fully responsible to fund the funeral and the up keeping of the family while the investigation goes on.
“Last Mile Health is working with the police to make sure that the fact is established as to what led to the death of our driver,” he said.
Josiah Philips, a resident of Jacob Larteh Town, condemned the mysterious death, adding that “the death of that driver made me to feel very different because it might scare health workers and other good institutions away from this district.”
He continued, “I am calling on the Liberia National Police to properly investigate this matter because if nothing is done to know what went wrong it might lead us to suffer.”
Meanwhile, the Liberian National Police has launched an investigation into the incident.
