Speaking on the origins of the institution, Mr. John B. Travis, Director of the David Board Vocational College, highlighted the growing need for technical education.
Mr. Travis told FrontPage Africa that the inspiration to establish the vocational school came from observing that many children who had passed through his organization’s orphanages across the country lacked sustainable skills after being reunited with their relatives.
“We realized that these children, especially those attending secular schools, also needed vocational education to build a sustainable lifestyle,” Mr. Travis stated.
Mr. Travis further disclosed that the school will operate alongside the regular academic programs, emphasizing the importance of students from other schools taking advantage of the technical training opportunities his institute will be offering during the upcoming 2024/2025 academic year.
He also noted that students enrolling in the upcoming academic year would be charged affordable fees for the ten-month program, disclosing that in addition, graduates will be provided with startup kits to support their career pursuits.
The David Board Memorial College, Mr. Travis disclosed that, will offer training in several departments, including Electrical, Building Trades, Mechanical, Tailoring (Fashion Design), Computer Science, Catering, and Agriculture.
He divulged that the school is being funded by goodwill Liberians and international friends of Liberia. Mr. Travis emphasized that special consideration would be given to underprivileged Liberians, with scholarship opportunities for single parents and disabled youths.
Mr. Travis also called on goodwill citizens, NGOs, and politicians to contribute to the school’s operations to enable more young people to receive technical education.
