Monrovia – The People’s Foundation Africa has launched Covid-19 Pregnant Care Package for expectant mothers in Montserrado and Margibi counties in Liberia. The program is part of the organization’s anniversary celebration.
The launch was in collaboration with the Paramount Young Women Initiative and Pregnant Care Charities both organizations work with women and girls on reproductive health issues.
Liberia greatly suffered during the 2014 Ebola outbreak where women and children bore the blunt of the health, social and economic challenges. Expectant mothers particularly suffered as the result of EVD where access to health facilities and workers were challenging.
With lessons learnt from the EVD Crisis, the People’s Foundation Africa (PFA) thought it wise to support expectant mothers during this coronavirus pandemic.
The support included connecting them with medical practitioners and vehicle owners who would provide phone call consultations and vehicle support should they need to be taken to a health facility during curfew hours respectively.
Additionally, with support from supporters and partners, PFA provided a gift bag known as “Moses bag” containing items such as new born and children clothing (overhauls, buttonballs, sleep wear, hats, socks, shirts, pants etc), baby lotion, soap, diapers, wipes, baby bed and net, sanitation napkins, nose masks, rice, Maggie cubes/chicken stocks, onions etc.)
Prior to the distribution of the items, birth classes were held with the participants by practitioners including OBGYN and a registered midwife where participants discussed their challenges and asked important questions of birth preparedness, medications, challenges, the importance of attending Ante Natal visits at recognized facilities, what to expect and Covid-19 prevention.
The first phase of the project targeted 100 women. However, during the program, many pregnant women came to attend.
The participants came from surrounding communities in Clara Town, Duala, Logan Town and Brewerville in Montserrado and Joe Blow Town and Kakata in Margibi Counties.
Speaking at the program, PFA President Madam Kula Fofana expressed thanks and appreciation to all of the donors and supporters including partners such as the Paramount Young Women Initiative and Pregnant Care Charities for their support to the program.
She also called on well meaning Liberians and philanthropists to help support this initiative as the demand is high.
She also expressed her appreciation to Dr. Doryea Karbah, an OBGYN and Madam Alberta Brown, Registered Midwife for their support and for teaching the expectant mothers what they need to know especially during this Covid-19 Pandemic.
PFA mission is to work with vulnerable populations on health, education, agriculture and women’s rights including women and girls in making sure that every pregnancy is wanted and that no woman loses her life whilst giving life. This initiative is part of their efforts to end infant mortality in Liberia and Africa.
