Buchanan – A senatorial aspirant of Grand Bassa County, Charles P. Vah, has blamed lawmakers for the “abject poverty” faced by many Liberians during the course of the year 2019.
Mr. Vah, a native of Grand Bassa County who resides in the United States of America, is a major contributor to the development of the county through his friendship group – Friends of Charles P. Vah, based in Buchanan city.
The Friendship Group provides scholarships and books for needy students, an initiative that has being going on for several years in the county. The group says this is a means of achieving the educational goals of people of the county.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, December 21, in the port city of Buchanan, Mr. Vah said the huge unemployment rate and very low income of Liberians have created an environment where kids could not simply go to school during the year 2019.
“As for those who can actually go to school, they simply don’t feel happy because their parents can’t even afford recess for them,” said Vah, who has his eyes on the Senatorial seat of the county.
In 2020, Liberians across the 15 counties will go to the polls in a Special Senatorial Election, in which, 15 of the 30 senatorial seats will be up for contest. In Grand Bassa County, Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence’s seat will be up for contest and Mr. Vah seems keen on contesting for the will-be vacant seat.
Meanwhile, he has stressed that there were lots of “challenges, hardships, suffering and maltreatment” of people of the county for which, he claims, the lawmakers are mainly responsible.
He added that the poor decision of members of the legislature is a major factor affecting the livelihood of the common people, suggesting that lawmakers who have underperformed should not be re-elected in 2020.
“It is time for us to change those failed leaders; most especially, those leaders from Grand Bassa [County] who want everything for themselves,” Vah said.
“I want to tell my Bassa brothers and sisters that all is not lost because we’ve been sitting at the back to see what difference others could make but they lack vision and hate us.”
Vah claims that this year’s Christmas celebration “will be one of the weakest celebrations ever in the history of the country due to poverty”.
“It is saddened to hear our people crying that the Christmas will be bad for them due to the lack of money. The lawmakers are responsible for the continuous hardships faced by our people and they need to be replaced in 2020 for failing the [Grand] Bassa people and the people of Liberia,” he said.
“The ongoing political war of divisive politics between past and present leaders has been another factor leading to the suffering of our people which is a major concern for 2020, they must be checked out by the people at the ballot box”.
He said the year 2019 will be remembered as a year of challenges and difficulties for the people of Bassa and Liberia at large, but called on his compatriots not to lose hope because “there are still good leaders that can make meaningful impacts” for the country.
“I represent a new beginning and fresh start for the county; I will like to work for the people of Grand Bassa County and help lift the county out of poverty to prosperity. I am an aspirant for the Senatorial seat of Grand Bassa 2020,” he said.
“I want to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Friends Charles P. Vah, to extend to the people of Grand Bassa and Liberia a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous and Happy New Year 2020”.
