Monrovia-Liberia’s housing ambitions are entering a potentially transformative phase, with the National Housing Authority projecting the construction of 15,000 to 20,000 housing units by 2030, even as questions surrounding the Authority’s administration continue to linger.

By Willie N. Tokpah

National Housing Authority Managing Director Florence K. Geegbae made the projection Tuesday, October 6, at the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing in Monrovia, outlining plans that include partnerships with foreign investors, prefabricated housing manufacturers and several public-private partners.

Her announcement has placed the NHA at the center of one of the Boakai Administration’s most consequential development promises, on addressing Liberia’s housing shortage while confronting the rapid expansion and increasingly congested urban landscape of Monrovia.

But as Geegbae unveiled the scale of the Authority’s proposed housing drive, she offered little new detail on allegations previously raised against her administration, including calls for audits and investigations.

Asked whether she had submitted to an investigation and whether the allegations had been addressed, Geegbae declined to discuss the matter in detail.

She said the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs, which she identified as her employer, had already inquired into the allegations and that a detailed report had been submitted.

“The Ministry of State, which is my employer, has inquired and we have done a detailed report to the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs,” she told journalists.

She then indicated that she preferred to move beyond the issue.

A Housing Push With Foreign Backing

Geegbae said the Authority’s long-term projection is no longer limited to government-funded construction.

According to her, discussions are underway with several investors, including potential partners from Turkey and Italy, while another group involved in prefabricated metal housing construction is being considered for projects in Liberia.

She said she recently visited factories, housing estates and construction sites associated with one of the potential foreign partners.

The NHA chief said some investors could contribute thousands of housing units to Liberia’s housing stock, pushing the Authority’s overall projection to between 15,000 and 20,000 units by 2030.

“We should be having close to 15, 20,000 housing units constructed by 2030,” she said.

The scale of the projection is significant for a country where affordable housing remains one of the most persistent challenges confronting low- and middle-income families.

But the larger question now is whether the NHA can convert its growing list of investment discussions into completed, affordable homes.

From 600 Units to Thousands

Geegbae also provided a more immediate timeline.

She said the NHA expects to conclude projects involving 482 housing units and another 600 units as part of its short-term program. According to her, the projects have already passed several preparatory stages, including design, permitting, implementation planning, site planning and soil testing.

The 600-unit component is particularly important because it formed part of the government’s previously announced social housing agenda.

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai announced in his January 2026 Annual Message that the NHA would begin construction of 600 social housing units across six counties.

Geegbae’s latest comments suggest the Authority considers the projects to be moving through the implementation process. The challenge, however, will be translating plans, permits and site preparation into visible houses that Liberians can occupy.

Monrovia’s Housing Crisis

Geegbae also acknowledged the severity of Monrovia’s urban development problems, attributing much of the pressure to continued rural-to-urban migration. She described the capital’s urban environment as increasingly difficult to manage and said the government would have to strengthen zoning and urban planning.

The NHA is working with development partners, including the United Nations Development Programme, on urban development initiatives, she said. Geegbae disclosed that the Authority has also established a portal intended to improve zoning and planning. But she acknowledged that correcting Monrovia’s longstanding planning problems will not be simple.

In some areas, she suggested, correcting existing development patterns could require the removal of structures that do not conform to future urban plans.

That prospect highlights the delicate balance facing the government, expanding housing while simultaneously attempting to bring order to an urban environment that has developed rapidly and, in many areas, without effective planning.

Questions She Did Not Answer

While Geegbae spent much of Tuesday’s briefing detailing what the NHA intends to build, she declined to reopen the controversy surrounding allegations previously reported by local media.

Reports have raised allegations concerning procurement practices, administrative conduct and other issues within the Authority. Those allegations have been disputed and have not, by themselves, established wrongdoing.

Some reports have also called for comprehensive financial and performance audits of the NHA. Geegbae’s response was that the matter had already been addressed through a report submitted to the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs.

That response, however, leaves the public with a distinction worth watching as the housing program expands: an internal response to allegations is different from independently verified evidence of how public resources, contracts and housing projects are being managed.

That distinction could become increasingly important as the NHA moves from planning to implementation and begins engaging more foreign investors and private-sector partners.

Bigger Promises, Bigger Scrutiny

The NHA’s proposed housing expansion represents an opportunity to address a genuine national need.

But a 20,000-unit projection also means a substantial expansion in the volume of land transactions, contracts, construction activities, partnerships and potentially public resources passing through the Authority.

That will inevitably require strong procurement systems, transparent contracting, measurable construction milestones and credible oversight.

Geegbae insisted that the NHA has the expertise and plans to move Liberia’s housing sector forward.

For now, the strongest test of that claim will not be the number of investors visiting Liberia, the number of factories toured or the number of housing units projected on paper. It will be the number of completed and occupied homes.

And as the NHA moves toward its 2030 target, the public will be watching whether the Authority can turn its ambitious housing blueprint into a measurable national housing legacy, while providing sufficient documentation and transparency to answer legitimate questions surrounding its operations.

For Geegbae, Tuesday’s message was clear: Liberia should prepare for a major expansion of housing construction. The next chapter will be whether the houses, and the evidence of how they were delivered, match the promise.

New York, September 2026 — Liberia has secured new opportunities for maritime and port-security training, scholarships and expanded technical cooperation with the Republic of Cyprus, following a bilateral meeting between Foreign Minister H.E. Mme. Sara Beysolow Nyanti and her Cypriot counterpart, H.E. Dr. Constantinos Kombos, on the margins of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The engagement, an important milestone in Liberia–Cyprus relations, also culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultations, establishing a formal mechanism for regular dialogue and deeper cooperation between the two countries.

The agreement provides a platform to advance cooperation in maritime affairs, port security, higher education, scholarships, trade and investment, and people-to-people exchanges, while strengthening consultations on regional and global issues of mutual interest.

Minister Nyanti welcomed the agreement as an important step toward a more active and results-oriented partnership.
“A relationship doesn’t exist if it’s not active,” Minister Nyanti said, emphasizing that Liberia’s diplomatic engagements must increasingly translate into practical opportunities that support national development and economic diplomacy.
Maritime cooperation featured prominently in the discussions, reflecting the important roles both Liberia and Cyprus play in the global shipping industry.

Minister Nyanti highlighted Liberia’s position as a global maritime leader and emphasized the country’s responsibility to promote maritime safety and security, protect seafarers and vessels, and strengthen responsible management of the sector.

Minister Kombos highlighted Cyprus’s extensive experience in shipping and ship management and expressed his country’s readiness to deepen cooperation with Liberia.

Importantly, Cyprus offered specialized maritime and port-security training opportunities for Liberia, including capacity building in areas such as maritime security, law enforcement, customs and related security disciplines.

Cyprus also offered scholarship and specialized training opportunities for Liberians, including in maritime-related fields. Minister Nyanti welcomed both offers as tangible outcomes aligned with Liberia’s priorities for strengthening institutional capacity and investing in human-capital development.

The Ministers also discussed establishing a Liberia–Cyprus Joint Commission to coordinate bilateral cooperation and help translate agreements into concrete programs and measurable outcomes.

Minister Kombos extended an official invitation to Minister Nyanti to visit Cyprus, providing an opportunity to advance the agreements reached in New York and deepen engagement in maritime affairs, education, security and other areas.

The two Ministers also exchanged views on regional and international developments and opportunities for closer multilateral coordination. Minister Nyanti highlighted Liberia’s current tenure on the United Nations Security Council and its commitment to constructive multilateral diplomacy and international peace and security.

The signing of the Political Consultations MOU, together with commitments on maritime and port-security training, scholarships and institutional cooperation, marks a significant step toward transforming Liberia–Cyprus relations into a more active, practical and mutually beneficial partnership.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will work with relevant Liberian institutions and its Cypriot counterparts to advance the commitments and opportunities identified during the meeting. See less

MONROVIA — Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung has pushed back against reports that he was stopped and searched while transiting through Brussels Airport, dismissing the claims as the latest in a pattern of stories he says follow him regardless of how routinely he travels.

By Gerald C. Koinyeneh

In a statement addressing the reports, Koung said he had used the standard passenger route through the airport — the same one “everyone uses” — to pick up items for his daughter at the Duty Free stores. He said the screening was uneventful.

“No shoes, no jacket was removed,” Koung said, pushing back directly on the specifics of the reports.

The Vice President drew a comparison to an earlier controversy from 2024, when he flew on a private jet belonging to a friend, free of charge — a trip that also generated public discussion and scrutiny at the time. He suggested the pattern was not coincidental.

“Again, this is the effect of the package,” Koung said, referring — without further elaboration in his statement — to what he characterizes as a recurring dynamic around coverage of his travel.

VP Koung was en route to Vienna, Austria to attend the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Nuclear Technology Access

At the conference, Koung called for greater and more equitable access to peaceful nuclear science and technology, particularly for developing countries seeking to apply nuclear technology in healthcare, agriculture, environmental protection and radiation safety.

He reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear science and technology, arguing that access to its benefits should not be determined by geography or national income.

“We believe that access to peaceful nuclear technology must not be determined by geography or by national income. Its benefits must reach people in countries with the greatest needs,” Koung said.

‘’It is beyond the cloth and the recognizable colors of our flag lies a powerful expression of our national identity, our national history, and the struggles and aspirations of our people,” President Boakai told a crowd of government officials, diplomats, students, and citizens.

From Independence to Identity

The President noted that this year’s Flag Day, which follows last month’s 179th Independence Anniversary under the theme: “Strengthening National Identity Through Liberian-Led Historical Leadership,” must give Liberians one national identity – a visible, enduring symbol.

“It reminds us of who we are, where we come from, and the Liberia we must continue to build.”

He recalled the role of the seven women led by Susanna Lewis who sewed the first flag in 1847.

“Our national flag derives from the courage and determination to give physical form to the aspirations of our people as a nation in the making,” he stated.

Say No to Drugs – A Warning To The Students

Directing part of his remarks to young people, President Boakai called on students to live by the Flag Pledge by rejecting vices that destroy the future such as drugs.

“Learn the words of the pledge, but more importantly, understand and live by them. Loyalty to Liberia means respecting your fellow citizens, obeying the laws of the Republic, rejecting violence, protecting our national symbols, working hard and preparing yourself to serve your country,” he urged.

“In particular, I urge you to say no to drugs. Drug trafficking and the use of our country as a transit and operational center pose a serious threat, especially to our young people. Do not let anyone steal your future. Stay focused, disciplined, and determined to become the citizens that Liberia needs.”

The President praised students who participated in the parade, noting: “I saw discipline. I saw precision. I saw confidence and patriotism in the eyes of our young people. I am very proud of them.” He congratulated schools recognized as Best Salute, Most Disciplined, and Best Dressed.

Lead by Example – A Message To Adult Liberians

President Boakai challenged adults and public officials to match their words with action.

“We cannot ask our children to love Liberia while we undermine its institutions. We cannot ask them to respect the law while we disregard it. We cannot demand patriotism while we place personal, ethnic, religious, or partisan interests above the national good,” he declared.

As the head policymaker of the country, the Liberian leader announced the reintroduction of civic education in primary schools and the launch of standardized civic textbooks nationwide as a step toward restoring knowledge of the Constitution, history, and citizenship.

Commemoration, Not Complacency

Calling for national unity and development, the President intoned that the flag demands action against division and corruption.

“Our flag calls on us to action. It demands that we reject division, hatred, corruption, violence, and every force that threatens our national fabric,” he said.

“It calls on us to build a Liberia where our roads connect our people, electricity reaches more communities, healthcare improves, education is transformed, opportunities expand, our young people are not subjected to drugs, and every citizen can take pride under the Lone Star,” the President asserted, emphasizing that the flag belongs to every Liberian.

“To the elder in the village and the leader in the city, to the farmer in Lofa, the fisherman on the coast of Maryland, the worker in Monrovia, and to every Liberian at home and abroad. It belongs to all of us.”

One People, One Destiny

President Boakai called on Liberians to honor the sacrifices of the past and build for the future.

“May our flag continue to fly proudly over land and sea, and across the world, where for nearly two centuries it has served as a beacon of hope… May it remind us always that we are one people, one nation, with one destiny,” he said.

“As we always say, in all that we do: let us think Liberian, love Liberia, and together build Liberia. God bless the Lone Star. God bless the Republic of Liberia.”

Meanwhile, Education Minister, Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah, said the reintroduction of civil and the launch of its textbooks will help propel Liberian young learners into responsible leadership and love for nation.

The Minister extolled President Boakai for his stewardship of the country that continues to bring improvement in the educational sector of the country.

Monrovia – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has officially broken ground for the development of Providence Island, marking a major step in the Government of Liberia’s efforts to preserve the country’s history while transforming one of its most important heritage sites into a competitive tourism destination.

The groundbreaking represents a significant milestone in the implementation of the Government’s tourism development agenda and signals a shift toward deliberate investment in Liberia’s cultural and heritage assets as part of the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Boakai described Providence Island as central to Liberia’s historical identity and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that the country’s history is preserved, developed and presented to the world.

“We said tourism was going to be an important part of the ARREST Agenda. And today, we have started,” President Boakai said.

The President emphasized that Liberia possesses an important historical legacy that deserves greater international recognition.

“We want Liberians to know that if there is any history in Africa, we have it here,” he said. “This historic island is the beginning of the history of Liberia, and we are going to make the world know that it was not a forgotten place.”

Providence Island occupies a special place in Liberia’s national history and remains one of the country’s most significant heritage assets. Its development is intended to combine historical preservation, tourism infrastructure and visitor experience, creating a destination capable of attracting Liberians, members of the diaspora and international visitors while safeguarding the historical significance of the island for future generations.

President Boakai acknowledged that development of the historic site had been anticipated for years but said the groundbreaking represented the beginning of a new chapter.

“Even though some of you feel that there has been a little delay, I think today is the day,” the President said before formally breaking ground for the project.

Chairman of the Board of the Liberia National Tourism Authority (LNTA), Ambassador Christopher Hayes Onanuga, said the development demonstrates the Government’s willingness to move beyond discussions about Liberia’s tourism potential and make concrete investments in destination development.

He disclosed that initial works on the island are being financed directly by the Government of Liberia and credited President Boakai for ensuring that the project moved forward.

“We want the whole world to know that whatever money is being spent on this island now is directly from the Government of Liberia,” Amb. Onanuga said.

He added:

“It couldn’t have been done without the intervention of the President, who has said this is a key portion of his ARREST Agenda. You can see that he is prepared to see it through.”

Amb. Onanuga explained that activities are currently at the mobilization stage, with priority areas of the island being prepared as implementation of the project begins.

The Director General of the Liberia National Tourism Authority, Princess Eva Cooper, described the occasion as an important moment for Liberians who have long hoped to see Providence Island properly preserved and developed.

“Mr. President, thank you so much for being here today to break ground at this historic landmark in Liberia,” Director General Cooper said. “This project means a lot to many Liberians who want to see this island develop.”

She praised President Boakai for taking the political and financial decision to advance the project and said its significance extends beyond the current generation.

“Thank you for being the President to take on that mantle and make this a success story for Liberians and for unborn generations,” she said.

The Providence Island project is being implemented as a design-and-build development, allowing the technical design and construction processes to advance as an integrated project. Conceptual designs associated with the development provide the vision for the site, while detailed technical considerations will continue to guide implementation, particularly in relation to the preservation of the island’s historical character and artifacts.

For the Liberia National Tourism Authority, the project forms part of a broader strategy to move Liberia from simply identifying and promoting tourism potential toward developing market-ready tourism products and destinations capable of contributing to employment, entrepreneurship, investment, cultural preservation and national economic diversification.

Providence Island is expected to become a flagship heritage destination and an important component of Liberia’s destination brand, creating opportunities to tell the country’s story to both domestic and international audiences.

The groundbreaking also underscores the Government’s growing recognition of tourism as an economic sector capable of supporting local enterprise, attracting investment and creating new opportunities while protecting Liberia’s cultural and historical heritage.

With President Boakai formally launching the development, Providence Island now stands at the center of what the Government and the Liberia National Tourism Authority envision as a new era of heritage preservation and destination development.

As President Boakai declared at the historic site:

“Today, we are here to break that ground at this very historic Providence Island.”

The ceremony marks not merely the commencement of physical development, but a renewed national commitment to preserving Liberia’s history, transforming its heritage assets and ensuring that the story of Providence Island is known to the world.

Monrovia— President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has directed officials of Liberia’s national security apparatus to remain focused and resolute in the fight against illicit drugs, urging them not to be intimidated or distracted from confronting drug trafficking, securing the nation’s borders, and protecting Liberia’s national interests.

“We are not stopping. We will continue to fight for this country,” President Boakai declared on Thursday, August 13, 2026, as he addressed the 23rd Cabinet Meeting.

The Cabinet session focused on key national priorities, including strengthening evidence-based governance, expanding social protection, improving the delivery of essential services, and assessing progress under the Government’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development.

President Boakai emphasized that the fight against illicit drugs must be pursued alongside stronger border security, stressing that Liberia’s national response must address the broader security implications associated with drug trafficking.

“It is not just the drug trafficking. Our borders, we have to keep secure,” the President stated.

The Liberian Chief Executive called for enhanced coordination among security institutions and urged officials to exercise professionalism, sound judgment, and integrity in the discharge of their responsibilities.

He cautioned security officials against allowing public criticism or external pressure to interfere with decisions that require professional judgment.

“They should not make you not do what you’re supposed to do because if you didn’t have the knowledge, the expertise, the support, you wouldn’t be where you are,” President Boakai said. “Act with a clear mind with honesty, and ensure that those who go outside the law would face appropriate measures.”

President Boakai acknowledged the complexity of the drug situation but rejected any suggestion that Liberia should retreat from its campaign. He noted that the fight against illicit drugs is essential not only to protecting public safety and the future of Liberia’s young people, but also to safeguarding the country’s international reputation.

President Highlights Government’s Progress

Turning to the overall performance of his Administration, President Boakai pointed to progress being made in several areas, including healthcare, the timely payment of salaries, and infrastructure development.

He commended ministers and civil servants for the sacrifices they continue to make in service to the Liberian people, particularly the personal and family time devoted to carrying out their public responsibilities.

The President also encouraged members of his Cabinet to be more visible at national and public events, noting that the presence of government officials demonstrates institutional support for national programs and achievements.

Road Infrastructure Remains a Priority

On infrastructure, President Boakai highlighted the importance of connecting Liberia’s counties and communities through improved road networks.

He noted that the road toward Côte d’Ivoire is now accessible, while acknowledging the contributions of government institutions involved in financing and implementing road development projects.

The President, however, identified the Roberts International Airport Road project as an area requiring particular attention, signaling that the delivery of critical infrastructure projects will remain under close review.

President Boakai concluded by stressing that Liberia’s progress requires collective effort, cooperation, and a shared commitment to national development.

He urged Liberians to continue supporting the country’s development efforts as his Administration remains focused on delivering tangible results and improving the lives of citizens under the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development.

President Boakai made the statement Tuesday at Monrovia City Hall while chairing a meeting of the National Steering Committee on the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID), the government’s framework for delivering development results.

The President said Liberia’s progress depends on honesty, accountability and the responsible management of the country’s resources, emphasizing that the nation needs to improve the lives of its citizens.

“Everything that is required to make life better is right here in Liberia,” President Boakai said.

He acknowledged that poverty remains one of Liberia’s most pressing challenges but urged citizens and institutions to recognize their individual and collective responsibility in addressing the problem.

“Poverty is poverty. I don’t care about what we do. Each and everyone have a responsibility,” the President said.

President Boakai reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering tangible improvements, including quality roads, better public services, job opportunities, expanded access to education and other critical development initiatives.

He said the launch of the government’s development agenda in 2025 was based on a commitment made to the Liberian people to deliver concrete results.

“While progress has been made, we must be honest with ourselves,” he said, urging government institutions to identify and address institutional weaknesses rather than ignore them.

The President encouraged government officials to accept criticism and make necessary corrections, stressing that appointments, promotions and other opportunities within government should be based on performance and merit.

“We must be honest to admit and take corrections,” he said. President Boakai also cautioned officials against making excuses for poor performance, stressing that citizens expect their government to deliver.

“Liberians are not going to forgive you for the excuses, and the media are not going to listen to you,” he warned.

According to the President, the National Steering Committee has a critical role to play in providing effective oversight and strengthening coordination among government institutions to ensure that programs and projects are implemented efficiently.

President Boakai further stressed the importance of responsible management of national resources, warning that every dollar allocated for development must be handled with the highest level of accountability.

“All of the resources are for the development of this country. We have the responsibility of managing them. Every dollar must be managed with the highest responsibility,” he said.

President Boakai added: “Moving forward, all ministries and agencies are expected to make reports on time. Repeated delays, ineffectiveness, and inconsistency are unacceptable.”

President Boakai also underscored the importance of the private sector in advancing Liberia’s development, urging businesses to operate with competence, integrity and professionalism.

He said the government’s development agenda presents opportunities for private-sector investment and called on businesses to regard themselves as partners in Liberia’s national development.

The President also called on civil society organizations and the media to play their respective roles in promoting accountability, transparency and informed public discourse.

“Society must play a role in impacting change. I see you as partners. You are more than just observers,” he said.

President Boakai urged government institutions, the private sector, civil society and the media to work collectively to ensure that national development programs translate into meaningful improvements in the lives of ordinary Liberians.

During a bilateral meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President Boakai reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to strengthening ties with Türkiye and transforming the long-standing friendship between the two countries into a results-driven partnership that delivers tangible benefits for both nations.

Opening the high-level meeting, President Boakai thanked President Erdoğan for the warm reception accorded to him and the Liberian delegation. He conveyed greetings from the Liberian people and expressed appreciation for Türkiye’s continued support to Liberia in key sectors, including education, healthcare, humanitarian assistance, infrastructure development, and institutional capacity building.

The Liberian leader praised President Erdoğan’s personal commitment to Liberia over the years, noting that the relationship between the two countries has reached a stage where it can be elevated into a stronger and more structured partnership capable of producing measurable development outcomes.

A major focus of President Boakai’s presentation was the establishment of permanent diplomatic missions in both countries. He welcomed Türkiye’s decision to begin the process of opening a resident embassy in Monrovia, describing the initiative as an important milestone that will deepen diplomatic engagement, improve investment opportunities, strengthen development cooperation, and expand consular services.

President Boakai also announced Liberia’s intention to establish a resident embassy in Türkiye or, as an initial measure, open a Consulate General. He appealed for President Erdoğan’s support in facilitating that process, emphasizing that resident diplomatic missions in both capitals would create a stronger institutional framework for trade, tourism, education, cultural exchanges, and government-to-government cooperation.

President Boakai also announced Liberia’s intention to establish a resident embassy in Türkiye or, as an initial measure, open a Consulate General.
The Liberian President further proposed the creation of a Joint Cooperation Framework that would guide bilateral relations through clearly identified priority projects, designated focal points, and regular monitoring mechanisms to ensure effective implementation of agreed initiatives.

Among Liberia’s highest priorities, President Boakai highlighted the importance of establishing direct Turkish Airlines flights between Istanbul and Monrovia. He thanked President Erdoğan for personally facilitating the visit of a Turkish Airlines delegation to Liberia and described the proposed air connection as a transformative development for both countries.

According to President Boakai, direct flights would significantly increase trade, encourage tourism, promote business opportunities, strengthen diplomatic relations, and position Liberia as a strategic gateway to West Africa. He therefore urged President Erdoğan to support efforts aimed at ensuring the early commencement of Turkish Airlines operations in Liberia.

The Liberian leader also expressed his government’s readiness to explore a partnership with Türkiye to modernize Roberts International Airport. He acknowledged Türkiye’s internationally recognized expertise in airport management and invited both the Turkish Government and private investors to participate in upgrading Liberia’s main international airport into a modern regional aviation hub capable of supporting increased commercial and passenger traffic.

Infrastructure development also featured prominently during the discussions. President Boakai requested a landmark development project through the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), identifying the construction of the road linking 12th Street in Sinkor to Somalia Drive as one of Liberia’s most urgent infrastructure priorities.

He explained that the proposed road project would ease traffic congestion, stimulate economic activities, improve transportation, and serve as a lasting symbol of the enduring friendship between Liberia and Türkiye.

President Boakai used the meeting to reaffirm that Liberia remains open to foreign investment and encouraged Turkish companies to explore opportunities in agriculture, agro-processing, energy, housing, road construction, bridge development, ports, manufacturing, mining support services, and tourism.

To strengthen private sector engagement, he proposed the establishment of a Liberia–Türkiye Business Council that would facilitate cooperation between businesses from both countries and help translate investment interest into concrete economic partnerships.

The President also underscored Liberia’s interest in expanding educational and healthcare cooperation with Türkiye. While acknowledging Türkiye’s longstanding scholarship programs for Liberian students, he called for increased collaboration in technical and vocational education, university partnerships, teacher training, hospital modernization, medical equipment supply, and specialist medical training.

Additionally, President Boakai welcomed the possibility of greater engagement with Liberia’s educational sector through the Maarif Foundation, expressing confidence that such cooperation would contribute to improving educational standards and creating greater opportunities for young Liberians.

Among Liberia’s highest priorities, President Boakai highlighted the importance of establishing direct Turkish Airlines flights between Istanbul and Monrovia.
On security matters, President Boakai proposed stronger defense cooperation between the two countries. He said Liberia would welcome Turkish support in professional military training, peacekeeping preparation, logistics, intelligence cooperation, and the provision of appropriate defense equipment to strengthen national security and improve border protection.

The Liberian President also appealed for practical visa facilitation measures to make travel easier for Liberian citizens, particularly those who already possess valid United States, Schengen, or other internationally recognized visas. He noted that easier visa access would encourage business, tourism, educational exchanges, and closer people-to-people relations between Liberia and Türkiye.

President Boakai reaffirmed Liberia’s appreciation for President Erdoğan’s leadership and friendship, expressing optimism that the discussions would usher in a new era of cooperation.

He said his administration is prepared to move swiftly in implementing agreed initiatives and expressed hope that the relationship between Liberia and Türkiye would be defined by the opening of resident embassies, the launch of direct commercial flights, increased investments, and the successful implementation of major development projects that will benefit both countries for years to come.

The two leaders met at the Vahdettin Pavilion before holding bilateral talks.

Türkiye’s Communications Director Burhanettin Duran and Erdogan’s chief foreign policy and security adviser Akif Cagatay Kilic also attended the meeting with the West African leader.

Erdogan said during the meeting that it would be “beneficial for us to continue taking steps to evaluate the trade volume potential of the two countries,” according to a statement from the Directorate of Communications.

He added that Türkiye would work to strengthen cooperation with Liberia in areas such as defense industry, security, education, and transportation.

The Turkish president also congratulated Boakai on Liberia’s election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

MONROVIA – When Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS) Director General Eugene Fahngon Wednesday, July 8 declared that “the senators are not gods,” he did more than challenge members of the Liberian Senate. His remarks transformed an ongoing dispute over legislative oversight into a wider national conversation about democracy, accountability, and freedom of expression.

By Selma Lomax, selma.lomax@frontpageafricaonline.com

The controversy follows a decision by the Liberian Senate to summon Civil Service Agency Director General Josiah Joekai and Rural and Renewable Energy Agency Director General Samuel Nagbe to appear before the Senate Committee of the Whole after lawmakers considered statements attributed to the two officials to be disrespectful toward the Legislature.

The action came after Bomi County Senator Edwin M. Snowe Jr. complained to the Senate, arguing that the officials should explain remarks allegedly directed at the institution. Senators subsequently agreed that both officials should appear before the Committee of the Whole to clarify their statements.

Members of the Senate defended their decision by emphasizing that while Liberia’s Constitution protects freedom of expression, public officials also have a duty to exercise responsibility and professionalism when speaking about constitutionally established institutions.

According to lawmakers, preserving the dignity of the Legislature is essential to maintaining confidence in democratic governance.

Fahngon, however, offered a sharply different interpretation. Using his podcast as a platform, the LBS Director General questioned whether criticizing senators could legally amount to contempt of the Legislature. Referring to Article 44 of the Constitution, he argued that legislative contempt involves actions that obstruct or interfere with the work of the Legislature rather than public criticism or disagreement.

According to Fahngon, expressing dissatisfaction with senators or questioning their conduct does not prevent lawmakers from carrying out their constitutional duties. Therefore, he argued, criticism alone should not become grounds for summoning government officials before the Senate.

“The senators are not gods, and no elected official is beyond criticism. Liberia’s Constitution protects the right of every citizen, including public officials, to speak freely. Disagreeing with the Senate is not the same as obstructing its work, and criticism should never be treated as a crime or an act of contempt,” he said.

Throughout the discussion, Fahngon maintained that public officials remain citizens first and do not lose their constitutional protections because they serve in government. He argued that no individual should face intimidation or threats over opinions expressed on matters affecting the country’s governance.

He added: “Article 44 is very clear about what constitutes contempt of the Legislature. Contempt involves actions that obstruct legislative functions, not opinions expressed on a podcast or criticism voiced by citizens. We must be careful not to confuse disagreement with disrespect or constitutional freedom with misconduct.”

Continuing, he said: “I will not be intimidated into silence because I accepted an appointment to serve my country. Public service does not require me to surrender my constitutional rights. If lawmakers believe in democracy, then they must also accept that accountability includes listening to criticism, even when it is uncomfortable.”

His declaration that senators are not above criticism has resonated across political circles, with supporters describing his comments as a defense of constitutional liberties and opponents arguing that his position risks undermining respect for the Legislature.

Fahngon also announced plans to organize what he described as a peaceful march involving ministers, directors-general, and officials from several government institutions to Capitol Hill.

According to him, the demonstration is intended to reinforce the principle that elected officials derive their authority from the people and should not place themselves beyond public scrutiny.

The planned march has added another political dimension to the dispute, signalling that the disagreement may extend beyond legal arguments into the arena of public opinion.

Meanwhile, Fahngon’s position has drawn visible support from other government officials.

Among them is Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation Managing Director Mohammed Ali, who published a Facebook post criticizing what he viewed as selective outrage within the Senate.

Ali argued that lawmakers have allowed serious allegations to be made against the First Family without demanding evidence, while reacting swiftly whenever criticism is directed at members of the Senate.

The public exchange has fuelled growing debate over whether Liberia’s democratic institutions are maintaining the proper balance between legislative oversight and constitutional freedoms.

As the Senate prepares to hear from the summoned officials, attention will not only focus on their testimony but also on the constitutional principles highlighted by Fahngon’s remarks.

Monrovia – The National Housing Authority (NHA) has announced the launch of the Off-Takers (Homeowners) Conference 2026, a landmark initiative aimed at expanding access to affordable home ownership opportunities for ordinary Liberians.

Scheduled for May 20, 2026 at Monrovia City Hall, the conference will serve as a national platform bringing together government institutions, housing developers, financial partners and prospective homeowners to discuss practical pathways to affordable housing in Liberia.

According to the NHA, the conference is centered on “one simple but powerful idea: making home ownership possible for ordinary Liberians.”

For the first time, future homeowners—referred to as off-takers—will be directly engaged in the national housing conversation.

The initiative seeks to provide clear information on how Liberians can qualify for housing opportunities, access flexible payment arrangements, and transition from renting to owning their own homes.

The conference will highlight several affordable housing options, including:

Cash Sales

Mortgage Financing

Rent-to-Own Arrangements

The National Housing Authority emphasized that the initiative is intended for all Liberians, including market women, commercial riders, civil servants, young professionals, and other income earners seeking sustainable housing opportunities.

“This conference is about bringing future homeowners directly into the housing conversation,” the NHA noted. “We are showing Liberians practical and achievable pathways to owning affordable homes.”

The Authority further stressed that affordable housing should no longer be viewed as an unattainable dream, but as a realistic and structured national plan supported through collaboration and inclusive participation.

With the theme, “From Renting to Owning—Your Journey Starts Here,” the conference is expected to provide participants with direct access to housing information, financing guidance, and government-backed support mechanisms designed to promote home ownership across the country.

The National Housing Authority is encouraging the public to participate and explore the opportunities available.

“Liberians, your chance to own a home is here. If you earn, you can own. Don’t rent forever—own your future; own your own home,” the NHA added.
