CAPITOL HILL, Monrovia – A high-level delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, led by Speaker Hon. Memounatou Ibrahima from Togo, visited the Speaker of the 55th Legislature, Hon. J. Fonati Koffa, on Tuesday, 12 November.
The purpose of the visit was to mediate and facilitate dialogue surrounding the ongoing impasse within the House of Representatives.
The ECOWAS delegation was warmly welcomed by Speaker Koffa, who expressed appreciation for the regional body’s commitment to ensuring harmony and effective governance in Liberia.
The meeting, held behind closed doors in the chamber, served as a confidential forum for discussing ways to resolve internal disputes in the House of Representatives.
Following the meeting, Speaker Memounatou Ibrahima emphasized the importance of regional solidarity and cooperation in promoting democratic values and stability.
“The ECOWAS Parliament is committed to supporting all member states in fostering effective and transparent governance,” Hon. Ibrahima said. “Our presence here today is a testament to our belief in Liberia’s progress and our desire to assist in any way we can.”
Speaker Koffa expressed gratitude to the ECOWAS Parliament for its timely intervention and reaffirmed his dedication to fostering unity within the House.
“This visit underscores ECOWAS’s commitment to the democratic growth and stability of Liberia. I am confident that with their guidance, we will move forward together,” Speaker Koffa asserts.
The ECOWAS delegation arrived in Liberia on Monday. They are expected to meet with the Deputy Speaker and majority bloc, the Vice President and President Pro Tempore of the Liberian Senate in a bid to settle the quagmire at the House of Representatives.
Observers say the delegation’s engagement reflects ECOWAS’s longstanding role as a stabilizing force in the region, actively participating in mediation efforts across West Africa to ensure peace and constructive dialogue.
