Monrovia – Liberia is still recognized as the largest ship registry in the world despite a recent report that dozens of its oil tankers used by Russia have stopped sailing under the Liberian and Marshall Islands flags in recent weeks. The Russian move comes in the aftermath of the United States recent sanctions enforcement on ships linked to Russian registries.
Monrovia – The Liberia National Police is said to be investigating how several truckloads of 40-foot containers mysteriously trucked out of the Freeport of Monrovia over the past few days. Police Director Gregory Coleman confirmed to FrontPageAfrica Saturday that all the drivers of a most recent incident involving stolen rice, have been arrested and are currently undergoing police investigation.

Monrovia – The lower house of the national legislature in Liberia has adopted a resolution for the establishment of a war and economic crimes court. The adoption coincides with the visit of Dr. Beth Van Schaack, the United States Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice. The resolution, if granted, would then lead to the enactment of a statute bringing the Court into force, decades after the end of the brutal civil war which killed thousands and forced scores more into exile.

If her last trip is any gauging point to what will unfold this week when she meets with key stakeholders in Liberia, the point advisor to the US Secretary of State on issues relating to war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, will have her hands full in what is poised to be a critical period in the US effort to bring perpetrators of Liberia’s civil war to justice: A major turning point toward the establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court.
