Kinjor, Grand Cape Mount County – The Management of Bea Mountain Mining Company on Monday boosted the enthusiasm of both kickball and Football teams of Grand Cape Mount County ahead of the quarter finals of the National County Sports Meet when it presented a check of US$10,000 to the county administration.
Grand Cape Mount County is already in high spirit after both kickball and football teams qualified for the next stage of the Liberia’s most acclaimed sports tournament.
The support from the mining company, which is based in the county and remains a major development partner of the local communities, comes following a communication from the office of the County Superintendent, Hon. Aaron B. Vincent.
In the letter signed January 13, Superintendent Vincent requested that Bea Mountain assists the county with the amount of US$10,000.to settle its financial obligations to players participating in County Meet.
Responding to the request, the newly appointed General Manager of BMMC, Mr. Halil Ozdemir, promised to support the county’s development drive including the sport teams of the county participating in this year’s sports tournament.
Presenting the check to Hon. Varney Sheriff, Assisting Superintendent for Fiscal Affairs of the county, Mr. Ozdemir called on the county leadership to be more proactive and see the company as its own.
The BMMC manager informed Superintendent Vincent that the company has an established football team that is fully supported by the company. The team, which is participating in the LFA National League, is composed of several sons of Grand Cape Mount County, he said.
He stressed that sport is a “unifying tool that must be used to promote peace among the citizens” while also calling on young people to free their minds and avoid being used by bad people to engage in violence.
He also wished the county well, urging the teams to thrive and lift the trophies of this year’s National County Sports Meet.
For his part, the Assisting Superintendent for Fiscal Affairs of the county lauded the company for “the timely intervention” in providing the check to support the football and kickball teams.
Hon. Sheriff promised that “the money will be used wisely” and thanked Bea Mountain for being the first company in the county to provide the “highest amount of support for sport development”.
He recounted the many support from the company since the outbreak of COVID-19 in Liberia, including the donation of food items, and hand washing materials to security officers, nurses, and citizens across the county.
Mr. Sirleaf also urged the management of the company to “do more, because more support is needed from the private sector to provide equipment to fight the coronavirus”.
The US$10,000 support to the county teams is not the first gesture from the management of Bea Mountain in recent time. The company has made huge donations and contributions to the county including support to the county health team and several communities to enhance the county administration’s response against the coronavirus pandemic.
In July 2020, the company donated a 25kva generator to the county health team to power the COVID-19 treatment center and also presented several items worth over US$14,000.
