Monrovia – The Government of Liberia through the Environmental Protection Agency of Liberia will receive in country delegates from United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) to conduct a Local Climate Adaptive Living (LoCAL) facility scoping which will run from August 26-30, 2019.
UNCDF mission is to assess the necessary conditions for the deployment of the LoCAL Mechanism to Liberia, identify key stakeholders, including national and subnational government institutions, and development partners, as well collect and validate information/data necessary for the design of LoCAL Phase I in Liberia considering policy documents, institutional frameworks in place, assessments and planning mechanisms; financing and budgeting systems; climate risk assessments, implementation of adaptation measures; investment menu, performance assessments, minimum conditions etc.
The Local Climate Adaptive Living facility of the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) was designed in 2011 to promote climate change–resilient communities and local economies by establishing a standard internationally recognized country-based mechanism to channel climate finance to local government authorities in Least Developed Countries (LDCs). It aims to contribute through the local level to country achievement of the Paris Agreement, and its associated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), the National Adaptation Plans (NAP) process, as well the Sustainable Development Goals – particularly poverty eradication (SDG 1), sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11) and climate action (SDG 13).
LoCAL increases local-level climate change awareness and capacities, integrates climate change adaptation into local government planning and budgeting in a participatory and gender-sensitive manner, and increases the financing available to local governments for climate change adaptation.
While in the country, the UNCDF two-man delegation which will be headed by Madam Sophie De Coninck, LOCAL Programme Manager for Africa will meet with several Government functionaries, development partners and relevant stakeholders. The Team is expected to visit some vulnerable communities within Montserrado County that are being impacted by climate change.
The Government of Liberia welcomes the UNCDF in country and look for to a successful mission
