MONROVIA – Liberia’s 172nd Independence Day celebration gets underway with a colourful event at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville, outside the country’s capital.
The event is being attended by dignitaries including foreign Heads of States.
According to the Liberian Government, Presidents Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone and Mahammadu Buhari of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President of the Ivory Coast, Alassane Ouattara and President of Guinea Alpha Conde are expected to join President George Weah for the occasion.
Other VIPs including Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor, former President Ellen Johnson and United States Ambassador Christine Elder have all arrived at the national stadium for the occasion.
The celebration began earlier at the Barclay Military barracks in Monrovia with the hoisting of the national flag and was followed by a grand parade through the streets of Monrovia.
President Weah and his foreign guests are expected to arrive shortly.
